Duc Chien speaks out about the reason for leaving The Cong Viettel

After much speculation surrounding his decision to leave The Cong Viettel, Nguyen Duc Chien spoke up for the first time to share the story behind his choice.

“Many people said that I left because of money. But in fact, the treatment my old team offered me was much higher than if I had stayed. I chose to leave because of my thirst and desire for titles, for a bigger goal and ambition than being in the top 3 like every year,” Nguyen Duc Chien shared with the media for the first time about the reason for leaving The Cong Viettel.

The army team confirmed their farewell to the 1998-born midfielder on June 15, when the 2024/25 season had not yet ended. Duc Chien's new destination is Ninh Binh , an ambitious rookie in the 2025/26 V.League. On his personal page, Duc Chien once shared about his incomplete farewell to the team he had been with for nearly a decade. This made the public and the media question the real reason behind his decision to leave.

“I really wanted to be able to dedicate my last season and say goodbye to the fans on the pitch. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to do that. Right after returning from the national team training session, I was suddenly asked to stop all team activities. I had to practice separately, not be able to participate in any activities or participate in any team activities even though my contract with the club still had two months left. I don’t understand why I was treated like that.”

According to Duc Chien, this situation forced him to make the decision to proactively terminate the contract. “I decided to compensate to terminate the contract early, not because I was sad, but because I wanted to keep for myself the last respect, and also the beautiful memories with a team that I was attached to, grew up with and achieved important milestones in my career.”

Growing up from the training center of The Cong Viettel, Nguyen Duc Chien is a symbol of the next generation of players of the heroic The Cong generation. He was a key factor in helping the army team win the V.League 2020 championship and has regularly participated in the national team in recent years. Saying goodbye to the team he has been with for many years is considered by Duc Chien as a necessary turning point, after much consideration, aiming towards new goals and challenges in the 2025/26 season.
