Accordingly, in response to the request in Official Dispatch No. 3304/BVHTTDL-PTTH&TTDT dated July 8, 2025 of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requesting opinions on granting a license to produce a national foreign television channel of VTV, the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission agreed in principle and at the same time requested the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to grant a license to produce a national foreign television channel to VTV in accordance with legal regulations.
The Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission stated that VTV's implementation of a national foreign television channel is part of the overall activities of providing national foreign television services, contributing significantly to the effective implementation of foreign information work, promoting the image of the country and Vietnamese people to the world , thereby enhancing Vietnam's position in the international arena, serving the cause of national construction and protection in the new situation.
The Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission also requested VTV to strictly direct the production of the channel as per the project content, to avoid errors and incidents that could affect Vietnam's foreign relations with international friends and partners.
Previously, reporting to General Secretary To Lam at the working session with the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission on the afternoon of June 11 on the implementation of tasks after the merger, Mr. Tong Van Thanh, Director of the Press and Publishing Department (Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission) said that, implementing the direction of the General Secretary, the unit had organized many working sessions with functional agencies, including the content of establishing a national foreign television channel.
Currently, VTV has completed the project to establish a national foreign television channel worthy of its stature, with the proposed name being submitted for approval to competent authorities as "Vietnam Today".
According to Mr. Thanh, relevant agencies are actively implementing steps to strive to launch the channel on the occasion of National Day, September 2, 2025 - a special time to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the country's founding.
Previously, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed Decision No. 747/QD-TTg dated April 11, 2025, assigning VTV to perform the task of providing national foreign television services to promote Vietnam's image in the 2025-2030 period in English and several popular languages on multiple platforms.
Accordingly, the national foreign television channel will broadcast 24 hours a day, with a maximum of 5 hours of new program production per day; 2 hours of editing, translation, reading and subtitling per day.
Along with that, VTV is also responsible for producing products and information content posted on the Internet; broadcasting, communicating, and transmitting national foreign television services to the system of television service providers abroad, on the following infrastructures: Terrestrial television, satellite, Internet, ensuring service coverage to key locations in countries and territories in Asia, Europe, Oceania and North America.
