US agricultural business delegation visits Vietnam

The US Deputy Secretary of Agriculture led the largest US agricultural business delegation in the history of bilateral trade relations to visit Vietnam. The focus of the visit was to connect with major importers through direct meetings, while also learning about Vietnam's market conditions.

On September 13, 2024, on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the upgrade to the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a Trade Delegation of more than 100 members, including 50 representatives of 35 US businesses; representatives of the Department of Agriculture of nine states and representatives from 21 agricultural industry associations under the US Department of Agriculture visited Vietnam, with two stops in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi .

The delegation was led by the Under Secretary of Agriculture for Foreign Affairs, United States Department of Agriculture, Alexis Taylor. This is the second visit to Vietnam by Ms. Alexis Taylor in the past two years. During the press conference, the Deputy Minister shared that the focus of this visit is to connect with major importers through direct meetings between businesses, and to learn about market conditions in Vietnam and the region through field visits, meetings with industry experts as well as bilateral meetings with representatives of Vietnamese Government agencies in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Deputy Secretary Taylor said the Southeast Asian market holds great opportunity for U.S. exporters. Vietnamese consumers are increasingly turning to U.S. products to meet growing demand in the food processing, retail, and restaurant industries, with the presence of many high-quality U.S. products such as nuts, fresh fruit, chicken, beef, and pork.

“Our presence in Vietnam is comprehensive and ambitious, and we work closely with the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and other government agencies. Our team works tirelessly to help Vietnam improve its regulatory infrastructure and science-based decision-making processes, open markets for U.S. products, maximize residue limits, use fertilizers correctly, sustainability, and more,” said Under Secretary Taylor.

The Trade Mission’s visit follows Vietnam’s opening of its market to U.S. peaches and nectarines, and comes as the two countries celebrate the first anniversary of the upgrade of the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, as the two countries’ leaders reaffirmed the importance of economic cooperation, trade, investment, and innovation-based inclusive economic growth as the core foundation and driving force for the bilateral relationship.
