2. In what circumstances was the song "Tien Quan Ca" composed by Van Cao?

  • A

Composition for the revolutionary armed forces

According to the author's own account in 1976, at the end of 1944, when the revolution was gradually ripening under the rule of French colonialists and Japanese fascists, and the people were eagerly waiting for the opportunity to rise up and seize power, musician Van Cao met Mr. Vu Quy, a Viet Minh cadre in charge of cultural and artistic work. Mr. Vu Quy suggested that the musician leave revolutionary activities and assigned the first task of composing songs for the revolutionary armed forces. At that time, Viet Minh was preparing to establish the Anti-Japanese Military and Political School (Military and Political School during the period of resistance to Japan, now the 1st Army Officer School), so the song needed to have a strong propaganda character, like a trumpet call for the liberation propaganda army.
At that time, musician Van Cao had not yet known about Viet Bac - the revolutionary base in the pre-uprising period. Familiar images to him were Ga Street, Hang Bong Street, Bo Ho Street... and he had not yet met the revolutionary army soldiers in the first military course. He struggled, searching for familiar sounds and images in the afternoons walking around the streets of Hanoi to create inspiration. And in the attic of house number 45 Nguyen Thuong Hien Street, during the gloomy, hungry, cold, and miserable winter days, he wrote the song "Tien Quan Ca".
