Nuclear and radiation incident response drill

On December 15, at the Provincial Center for Information and Application of Science and Technology Advances, the Provincial Steering Committee for Radiation and Nuclear Incident Response (UPSC) organized a drill to respond to radiation and nuclear incidents in the province in 2023. Comrade Phan Tan Canh, member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee attended.

The hypothetical situation is that, at a scrap collection shop in Tan Tai ward, Phan Rang-Thap Cham city, a scrap sorting staff discovered a deformed cylindrical box with a warning sign attached to the iron box, suspecting that it could be a component containing dangerous radioactive materials, so they called the UPSC Executive Committee of Phan Rang-Thap Cham city, the standing member of the UPSC Executive Committee of the province is the Department of Science and Technology.

After receiving the information, the authorities were present at the scene to provide initial safety instructions for the people. At the same time, they sent specialized staff with specialized equipment to the scene to verify the radiation incident, assess and determine the incident alarm level; propose to activate the city UPSC plan according to the level 1 alarm level. Based on the actual situation, the leaders of the Provincial People's Committee decided to activate the UPSC plan and establish a field steering committee, assigning the Department of Science and Technology to be the head of the steering committee, prepare a detailed plan for UPSC operations, direct the zoning of the area, and wait for human resources and equipment support from experts and the UPSC team. Through the exercise, the authorities coordinated to handle and promptly recover the source of radioactive materials. The implementation steps must be quick, in order to minimize the time of contact with the response source, ensuring safety.

Speaking at the drill, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee emphasized: This is the first time the province has organized a radiation and nuclear UPSC drill. The drill is organized with the aim of raising the sense of responsibility for ensuring radiation safety and security of radioactive sources of management agencies and facilities conducting radiation work; contributing to improving the capacity of leadership, direction, command and coordination between forces in UPSC work on radiation and nuclear incidents in the province. At the same time, raising awareness for people in the whole province, especially businesses and individual business households involved in and potentially causing radiation incidents and nuclear incidents in the province.
