2 reasons why benchmark scores decrease
Speaking with VietNamNet, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Thang - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that based on the 2023 high school graduation exam, the benchmark score will generally decrease compared to 2024. The reason is that the enrollment target has increased and the math test score this year is lower than last year.
However, according to Mr. Thang, when competing with each other, top schools (schools with high admission scores in previous years) will still maintain their performance. On the other hand, because this year there are many admission methods and score conversions, top schools tend not to reduce their admission scores.
According to Associate Professor Bui Hoai Thang, for Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, the school has maintained a stable performance in enrollment. This year's benchmark score may decrease, but the decrease is very small compared to last year because the 2025 score scale is 100 compared to the 2024 score scale of 90.

In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology will enroll 5,550 students. The school applies a comprehensive admission method for the majority of candidates along with a direct admission method according to the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the school's regulations. In which, the direct admission method according to the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the school's regulations only accounts for 1-5% of the total enrollment target. The comprehensive admission method includes criteria on academic ability, other abilities, and social activities, accounting for 95-99% of the total enrollment target.
How to calculate scores of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology
For the comprehensive admission method including criteria on academic ability, other abilities, and social activities, the admission score converted to a 100-point scale is calculated according to the formula: Admission score = Academic score + Bonus points + Priority points.
Academic score on a 100-point scale is calculated as follows:
Academic score = [Ability score x 70%] + [Converted high school graduation exam score x 20%] + [High school study score x 10%].
Bonus points are the total of bonus points, bonus points, and incentive points for candidates with special achievements that do not exceed 10% of the maximum score of the admission scale (maximum 10 points on a scale of 100).
Candidates with [Academic score] + [Achievement bonus points] < 100 points then bonus points = [Achievement bonus points].
Candidates with [Academic score] + [Achievement bonus points] ≥ 100 points then bonus points = 100 - [Academic score].
In which, the bonus points are considered from other achievements, literature-sports-arts, social activities, maximum 10 points, on a scale of 100 decided by the admissions council depending on the number of applications and the candidates' achievements.
Candidates who are prioritized for direct admission according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training will be considered for additional achievement points according to the calculation method of the comprehensive admission method and will only be added once. Foreign language certificates will only be used for conversion in admission scores, not used in calculating additional points.
Priority points: Candidates with [Academic score] + [Bonus points] < 75 points then priority points = [Converted priority points].
Candidates with [Academic score] + [Bonus points] ≥ 75 points, then priority points = (100 - [Academic score] - [Bonus points])/25 × [Converted priority points], rounded to 0.01.
In which, converted priority points = [Priority points (area, subject)]/3 x 10.
Maximum priority points converted to 9.17 points/100-point scale (converted from a maximum of 2.75 points/30-point scale according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training).
