The most notable new point of the literature exam for 10th grade admission in Hanoi this year (which is also the common point for literature exams in other localities) is the use of materials outside of textbooks.

The number of texts and works that students can access to practice skills is not limited to more than 10 works as before but can be many times more. Students' practice (reading, writing) must also increase in number to meet new requirements.

"Supporting the new points, using materials outside the textbooks", most literature teachers in Hanoi when asked expressed the same opinion. However, when commenting on the choice of materials in this year's literature exam, teachers' opinions are still different.

"The material is good, simple, close, and touching," Ms. Ha Thi Thu Thuy - literature group of Einstein High School (Hanoi) - commented on the selection of material from the poem Happiness by Giang Nam.

Many teachers share this view. However, there is also a teacher who commented that the exam question for Hanoi students used a Southern language. In reality, there are many lessons using the Northern language, which is closer to students. This teacher also thinks that the poem chosen for the exam is not poetic and does not have enough "space" to demonstrate students' ability to perceive.

However, when using non-textbook materials, we must accept many different viewpoints. Because textbook materials are materials that have gone through a censorship process, ensuring standards and no controversy. Whether external materials are good or bad depends on each person's viewpoint. And in an exam, the test questions meeting the majority and achieving the exam's objectives is an 80-90% success.

The expected part will be how to differentiate the test well to encourage students who are truly talented in literature and gradually change the way of teaching in schools.

Ms. Ha Thi Thu Thuy thinks that the average score will be around 7-8 points. If this prediction is accurate, the average score for this year's literature exam will be high. Ms. Dinh Thi Huong - a teacher at Tuyensinh247 - thinks that good students will only get 6-7 points.

Agreeing with the opinion that the exam was quite easy for good students and above, another literature teacher in Hai Ba Trung district said that the types of questions were familiar, did not challenge students and were still quite safe as the traditional exam setting viewpoint of Hanoi. That means there was no breakthrough, no originality even though this was the first exam with many changes, an opportunity for a breakthrough.

"This question makes it difficult to classify students. We really need a reasonable scoring system that respects students' creativity," the teacher expressed her wish.

The entrance exam for grade 10 in Hanoi for the 2025-2026 school year will take place on June 7 and 8 (for non-specialized students) and June 9 (for specialized students). Candidates for non-specialized students will take three exams in literature, math, and foreign language.

The whole city of Hanoi has over 102,000 candidates taking the exam, of which 64% will be admitted to public high schools.

English test is within your ability

Ms. Vu Dieu Linh, an English teacher at Chu Van An High School (Hanoi), commented that the test was not difficult. The questions at the recognition and comprehension levels accounted for about 32/40 questions. Therefore, students with an average level of study, who review thoroughly and do their homework carefully can complete 80% of the test requirements and achieve a score of 8 or above.

"The test covers a wide range of knowledge, is within the range of the candidate's ability, but ensures differentiation. There are no questions that challenge the candidates," said Ms. Dieu Linh. Meanwhile, many candidates in Hanoi also said that their test scores were around 7.5-8.5. Some candidates said that the test was not difficult but due to carelessness, they made mistakes.
