Fishing with Traps

Việt NamViệt Nam29/05/2024

Along the Thu Bon River flowing through Pho Hoi to Cua Dai or on the Co Co River, people often see large nets fixed on the river to catch seafood. This tool is called "vô ram" by people in the North and Central, but in Quang Nam it is called "rỏ chò". Fishing is done by pulling a spinning net in this locality.

Please spend a day following author Do Anh Vu to experience “Fishing with a Trap”. This is a photo series submitted by the author to the Photo and Video Contest “Happy Vietnam” , organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications .

The "ro cho" profession has appeared in Hoi An for a long time. In the past, people used barbed nets, now they use fishing nets because they are soft, durable, and can withstand sun and rain, water and brackish environments. "Ro cho" is fixed in deep water areas on the river, with a large open water surface, so we often see "ro cho" concentrated in main rivers or wide river branches.

"Rở chở" means "chòi rở", according to the dialect of Da Nang City and Quang Nam . Fishermen drive their boats to the fishing area for about 25 minutes and anchor about 70 meters from the "rở chở", then release composite baskets to move to the "chòi rở". They start to drop nets into the sea, connecting lights from the power source placed on the big boat.

The net is made of a large net, about 80 to 130 square meters wide. The four corners of the net are fixed with four large bamboo poles planted in the riverbed and connected to a rotating shaft placed on a hut via a long winch system.

The net is pulled up after being submerged in water, the shrimp and fish are neatly inside. The fishermen row the boat and perform physical movements to get into the net (picture 1).

Then, use a 2m long stick to pull the net to collect shrimp and fish and drain the water inside. Next, collect the shrimp and fish to the pre-arranged hole in the net so that the shrimp and fish fall into the basket below.

Shrimp and fish caught after one drag of the net.

Not only in Quang Nam, but also in other provinces such as Phu Yen or Binh Dinh, where there are many lagoons, lagoons, and large rivers, this type of fishing also appears./.
