Uterine rupture is a rare and serious obstetric emergency. The cause of uterine rupture is determined to be due to the mother having a ruptured uterus in the previous birth and patching the rupture.

On August 9, City International Hospital (CIH) successfully saved the life of pregnant woman NTHH (33 years old, living in Binh Tan district) who was 35 weeks pregnant and had a ruptured uterus.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain, especially pain in the left hip. Immediately, the medical team assessed the seriousness of the mother's condition and ordered a cesarean section, even though the fetus was only 35 weeks old.

The surgery was performed immediately after that. When performing abdominal surgery, about 500 ml of blood was found in the abdomen. The mother's old cesarean section wound was still intact. The surgical team quickly removed the baby from the mother's womb and sent it to the Pediatrics Department for further care.

Next, when examining the uterus, the doctor discovered a rupture at the bottom of the uterus, about 2cm in diameter, with intestinal loops stuck to the damaged area. The surgical team from the Obstetrics Department coordinated with the surgical team from the Surgery Department to separate the intestinal loops stuck to the rupture, restoring the damaged uterus and intestinal loops.

After the surgery, the mother recovered quickly. The baby was returned to her mother after 3 days of special care. Both mother and child recovered very quickly.

According to Dr. Ta Thi Thanh Thuy, Medical Director and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, this is a very serious and rare obstetric emergency. The cause of uterine rupture: during the previous childbirth, the mother had a uterine rupture and the rupture had been patched by the doctor. However, the mother did not know and did not inform the obstetricians.

“Pregnant women should try to remember all related illnesses, whether internal diseases or history of cesarean section or surgery (if any) before pregnancy and inform the obstetrician. This helps the pregnancy monitoring process to be safe and smooth; there are measures to anticipate and prepare plans for unexpected situations,” Dr. Thuy recommends.
