Diarra sues FIFA. |
Diarra has been in a decade-long legal battle with FIFA, stemming from the former midfielder being ordered to pay £8.8m for breach of contract at former club Lokomotiv Moscow in 2014.
At the time, FIFA banned Diarra for 15 months after he terminated his contract with the Russian club. This came after a dispute involving Lokomotiv attempting to reduce Diarra's salary based on performance.
Diarra considered joining Charleroi in the Belgian league but was denied when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) sided with FIFA. Diarra sued in 2015, claiming he was blocked from the move because FIFA refused to issue the International Transfer Certificate needed to register with the Belgian Football Federation.
When the deal fell through, Diarra argued that FIFA’s actions violated European labor law. In October 2024, the European Court of Justice (CJEU) ruled in Diarra’s favor, finding that some of FIFA’s regulations on player transfers violated European Union law.

Diarra missed the opportunity to play in Belgium. |
According to the BBC , Diarra had hoped that FIFA and the RBFA would contact him to reach a financial settlement. But after a period of waiting without any contact, the former midfielder decided to demand £56 million in compensation through the lawsuit.
"I have been fighting this legal battle since August 2014," Diarra said. "I am doing this for myself, for all the young players, the less famous ones, who do not have the financial and psychological capacity to fight FIFA in court."
Diarra received support in his legal battle with FIFA from professional players' associations such as FifPro, FifPro Europe, and the French UNFP, as well as the Dutch organization Justice for Players (JfP).
