Human conversation is becoming more and more like ChatGPT

(Dan Tri) - Recent research reveals an astonishing trend: Instead of AI learning to communicate like humans, we ourselves are gradually "talking like ChatGPT".

A new study from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (Germany) has shown that the widespread use of ChatGPT is reshaping human communication styles, making it more difficult than ever to distinguish between AI-generated text.

The Gizmodo research team leader emphasized that humans are gradually integrating into the AI's linguistic style, making it "much harder" to detect AI-generated text.

The term "GPT" became common in communication.

In just 18 months since ChatGPT exploded, research has found a significant increase in “GPT words” – words that were previously less common in everyday speech – in human language.

To reach this conclusion, the scientists conducted an in-depth analysis. They uploaded millions of documents including emails, essays, academic papers, and news articles to ChatGPT, asking the tool to “edit.” They then identified words that ChatGPT frequently used, such as “delve,” “realm,” and “meticulous.”

These “GPT words” were then tracked across a massive amount of data: 360,000 YouTube videos and 771,000 podcast episodes, including content from before and after this massive language model was released.

AI is "back-feeding" language patterns into the human mind.

The study results showed a significant increase in the frequency of use of “GPT words” in spoken English. “The patterns stored in AI technology seem to be propagating back into the human mind,” study co-author Levin Brinkmann told Scientific American.

"It's natural for humans to imitate each other, but we don't imitate everyone around us equally," Brinkmann explains. "We're more likely to imitate what others are doing if we perceive them as knowledgeable or important."

This reveals a remarkable trend: As AI becomes increasingly “smart” and “important” in everyday life, humans unconsciously learn and re-create how they speak.

In addition to the words mentioned, other “GPT words” include “underscore,” “comprehend,” “bolster,” “boast,” “swift,” “inquiry,” “meticulous,” and “groundbreaking.”
