The Spain international is set to miss the majority of the 2024/25 season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Carvajal is aiming to return for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™. However, Spanish media reports suggest that he is unlikely to feature in this year's tournament.
Coach Xabi Alonso does not want to take any risks with Carvajal. It is likely that this defender will continue his treatment and is expected to return only at the end of July, when Real Madrid prepare for the 2025/26 pre-season training trip.
In the 3-1 victory over Pachuca in the early morning of June 23, coach Xabi Alonso applied a 4-4-2 formation, with Trent Alexander-Arnold playing the role of right-back instead of Carvajal. This is also the optimal option for "Los Blancos" when waiting for the Spanish defender to return.
Previously, Alonso had harbored ambitions of playing a three-man defence, with Carvajal playing as a right-sided centre-back and Alexander-Arnold as a right winger. The remaining two centre-back positions would belong to Antonio Rudiger and Dean Huijsen.
Madridistas were impressed with Alexander-Arnold's creativity, but his defensive performance remains a big question mark. One fan said: "We shouldn't press high like Barcelona, it'll be easy to concede goals, and Trent is a poor defender." Another agreed: "Trent doesn't know how to cover the second post. This defensive system is too easy to exploit."
The win over Pachuca helped Real Madrid lead Group H of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ with 4 points, equal with Salzburg but with a better goal difference.
