In a report released on August 26, a team of researchers at Stanford University said that over the past three years, the number of entry-level jobs in fields with high exposure to AI — such as accountants, programmers, and administrative assistants — has declined by 13%. In contrast, employment trends have remained stable or improved for experienced workers in the same fields, although the pace has slowed for the 22- to 25-year-old age group. On the other hand, jobs with less technology exposure, such as nursing, have increased.

The study, by economist Erik Brynjolfsson and colleagues at the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, adds to a growing body of recent reports on the impact of the AI wave on the labor market.

ChatGPT’s launch in November 2022 sparked both excitement and concern around generative AI. Since then, chatbots have been used in everything from coding to reporting to conversational therapy, with tech companies rolling out increasingly powerful AI models to meet this demand.

The rapid spread has sparked debate about whether AI will assist or replace jobs. According to the Stanford team, the occupations that will see the biggest declines are those where AI has the potential to directly automate jobs rather than just help humans do them better.

To conduct the study, the team analyzed data from Automatic Data Processing (ADP), a company that processes payroll for millions of workers at tens of thousands of businesses. However, they note that the report has not yet been peer reviewed.
