Captain and coach Truong Quoc Bao said that although the South African tennis team did not bring the strongest force to Vietnam due to the absence of No. 1 Lloyd Harris (ranked 168th in the world ) and veteran Kevin Anderson, the South African tennis team is still rated higher than the Vietnamese tennis team when the main player Kris Van Wyk is currently ranked 416th in the world (above Ly Hoang Nam, ranked 554th in the world). The South African team's No. 2 player, Philip Henning, is currently ranked 748th in the world, while Vietnam's No. 2 player, Trinh Linh Giang, is not currently on the world rankings.

Vietnam tennis team promises to surprise South Africa in Davis Cup Group II play-off

Tennis player Ly Hoang Nam said that although the South African team this time is not the strongest, it is very even, and is a challenge for the Vietnamese team. "The Vietnamese tennis team needs to compete with the highest spirit to be able to win. I myself do not put too much emphasis on the result, when the coaching staff assigns me to compete in a match, I try to win that match. The whole team is also determined to compete with all their might for the country's flag to stay in Group II of the Davis Cup," Ly Hoang Nam shared.

Coach Truong Quoc Bao also confided that in tennis, rankings sometimes do not fully reflect the abilities of the players. The Vietnamese tennis team relies on the efforts of each player to make a difference against the South African team.

South African tennis team is rated higher than host Vietnam

However, the South African tennis team is also determined to achieve the goal of winning the final victory.

The 2024 Davis Cup Group II Play-offs will be played in a 5-3 format. On the first day (January 2), there will be 2 singles matches. On the second day, there will be doubles matches. If the winner is not determined, there will be 2 more singles matches. Ly Hoang Nam is the main force of the Vietnamese tennis team in both singles and doubles.
