The North American film market last weekend witnessed a dramatic competition, when two works of two opposing genres - horror and comedy - together stormed the box office charts.
Surpassing all competitors, the new horror film "Weapons" has excellently taken the top spot with an impressive opening revenue of 42.5 million USD.
Warner Bros.'s work revolves around the mysterious disappearance of a group of students, bringing a wave of horror and curiosity to the audience.
According to Franchise Entertainment Research expert David A. Gross, this is "a respectable debut" for an original horror film.
Starring Julia Garner (of "Ozark" fame) and Josh Brolin (of "Avengers: Infinity War" ), "Weapons" proves the appeal of its creepy, gripping stories.
Not to be outdone, in second place is "Freakier Friday" - the sequel to Disney's popular 2003 family film.
Featuring the return of legendary couple Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in a body-swapping story, the film grossed $29 million in its opening weekend.
Notably, this opening weekend not only far exceeded the average for a comedy sequel, but also significantly surpassed the original film 22 years ago, proving the successful "revival" of a classic family film franchise.
While two new releases made waves last week, several films that topped the box office charts in North America in previous weeks have taken a backseat.
Marvel's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," which stars Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, dropped to third place with $15.5 million.
"The Bad Guys 2" - the animated sequel about a group of reformed criminals - ranked fourth with $10.4 million.
Meanwhile, "Naked Gun" - a remake of the classic 1980s comedy series - closed the top 5 with 8.4 million USD in its second week of release./.
