On the morning of August 22, taking her 9-year-old daughter to a free examination for craniofacial defects organized by the 108 Military Central Hospital and Operation Smile, the young mother was surprised when the doctor diagnosed her daughter with a genetic disease inherited from her mother.
But unlike her daughter, who had a tumor that pulled her right cheek and deformed her eye, the mother had many spots on her neck, skin, and body. She said she was sick but had no money to treat it, and only spent money on her child.

Colonel - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang Duc, Director of the Center for Craniofacial and Plastic Surgery, Central Military Hospital, said that the child patient had neurofibromatosis.
"This is not a malignant disease, but it is very complicated because it cannot be completely cured and has a family factor. After examination, the patient was indicated for surgery to remove part of the tumor to correct the facial deformity. In case the tumor continues to grow after surgery, it will continue to have to be surgically removed, and cannot be completely treated," Associate Professor Duc informed.
Luckily, baby T. is one of 80 patients (mostly children) who will receive free surgery this time (August 25-29).

Associate Professor Duc said that from August 22 to 28, doctors will examine about 200 children with congenital malformations of the jaw, limbs, and skin and select about 80 patients for surgery. The children will receive free surgery and financial support for travel and accommodation.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Ngoc Lam, Deputy Director of 108 Central Military Hospital, said that the program of free examination and surgery for children with maxillofacial deformities is routinely performed at the hospital.
"This is a program that helps children with severe and complex malformations to be examined, consulted, and operated on completely free of charge, helping unfortunate children with congenital malformations to be treated with the highest quality of surgery, bringing a normal life to patients, bringing smiles to patients and their families," Associate Professor Lam informed.
