Many press works honored at Hanoi press awards continue to be honored at major central press awards, affirming the role of Hanoi press in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.
From the "fulcrum" of the Capital's journalists
In 1994, the Ngo Tat To Journalism Award, organized by the Hanoi Journalists Association, was officially launched. Two years later, in 1996, Hanoi City decided to upgrade the award to an annual journalism award specifically for journalists in the capital, in order to encourage the spirit and recognize the contributions of the press team. As soon as the decision was made to establish a journalism award for journalists in the capital, the city's leaders proposed that the Hanoi Journalists Association name the award after a typical cultural celebrity. After a period of discussion, the Hanoi Journalists Association decided to choose the celebrity Ngo Tat To - a famous poet, journalist, and writer of Hanoi - as the name of Hanoi's journalism award.
In the early days, the number of press works participating in the Ngo Tat To Press Award was still modest. However, by 2006 - after 10 years of organization - the award recorded a remarkable progress in both quantity and quality of works, with the participation of 9 press agencies of Hanoi such as: Hanoi Moi, Hanoi Radio and Television, Capital Security, Economics and Urban Areas, Capital Women, Law and Society, Stage Screen, Capital Labor, Capital Youth. This was also the year that the Ngo Tat To Press Award reaped a bumper harvest in both quantity and quality of works. That year, Hanoi Moi Newspaper won 7 awards, including 1 First Prize and 1 Second Prize.
After 30 years of being held annually, the Ngo Tat To Journalism Award has grown in both quality and quantity. As of 2024, nearly 1,000 works have been awarded, and hundreds of journalists and reporters have been honored. Chairman of the Hanoi Journalists Association To Quang Phan assessed that the Ngo Tat To Journalism Award has become increasingly complete and professional in its organization. From the initial 9 Hanoi press agencies, the award has now attracted the participation of 15 central and Hanoi press agencies. The number of works participating in the award has increased every year, from 39 works in 2006, to 151 works participating in 2024. In 2024, Hanoi Moi Newspaper had 11 award-winning works, including 1 first prize, 1 second prize and 2 third prizes.
“The journalistic works participating in the award vividly and diversely reflect all aspects of social life, and promote many key topics and political events of the Party, State and Hanoi city each year. Many articles have a widespread influence, contributing to encouraging cadres, party members and people of the capital to implement the Directives and Resolutions of the Central and the city; emulation movements; setting examples of advanced models, good people, good deeds; studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style; protecting the Party's ideological foundation; protecting the country's borders and islands; preventing corruption and negativity. Therefore, the Ngo Tat To Journalism Award has become a traditional professional award in the system of journalism awards nationwide, attracting a large number of press members of the capital to participate and is a professional "support" for those working in the capital's journalism" - commented journalist To Quang Phan.
Professional and unique
Not only the Ngo Tat To Journalism Award, to continue to promote the role of the press in the construction and development of the Capital - especially the work of Party building and cultural development, building Hanoi people in the new era, in 2018, Hanoi City officially launched 2 journalism awards: Journalism Award on "Party building and the political system of Hanoi City" and Journalism Award on "Cultural development and building elegant and civilized Hanoi people".
Right from the first year of organization, these two press awards have had a strong influence, receiving positive responses from many central and Hanoi press agencies. After only 5 months of launching the first season, there were 457 entries. Of which, the first press award on "Party building and political system of Hanoi city" received 194 entries from 27 press agencies; the first press award on "Cultural development and building elegant and civilized Hanoians" received 263 entries from 22 press agencies. In the first year of organization, comrade Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, then Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, commented: "The launch of two major press awards has contributed to helping cadres, party members and people of the capital understand more correctly and fully the Party's policies, the State's laws and policies, as well as the City's direction and management in implementing two important tasks of Party building and developing Hanoi's culture and people."
After 7 years of organization, these two press awards have created a strong influence, not only attracting a large number of reporters and journalists in Hanoi but also central and industry press agencies. In 2024, the 7th Press Award on "Party Building and the Political System of Hanoi City" received 184 works from 26 units. The 7th Press Award on "Cultural Development and Building Elegant and Civilized Hanoians" recorded the largest number of participants ever: 345 works from 48 press units (7 Hanoi agencies, 41 central agencies, ministries, branches, and localities) with all types of press.
Assessing the influence of Hanoi's press awards, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong said that the press awards have made important contributions to the development of the capital, demonstrating the city's determination in building the Party and political system; at the same time, showing special attention to human development and cultural development, considering this a key driving force for Hanoi to develop quickly and sustainably.
It can be seen that Hanoi's press awards are increasingly professional, expanding and having their own "character", clearly showing the identity of each press agency in the capital. From the Ngo Tat To Journalism Award, to the City's two major journalism awards, or the Writing Contest "Advanced Models, Good People, Good Deeds"..., many quality works have been selected to participate and won high prizes at national awards such as the National Journalism Award, the National Journalism Award on Party Building (Golden Hammer and Sickle Award), the Journalism Award on the National Assembly and People's Councils (Dien Hong Award)... For example, the series of works "Piloting Party activities in apartment buildings and new urban areas: Affirming position before the "tornado" of urbanization" by the group of authors Dinh Hiep, Huong Ly, Quang Hung (Hanoi Moi Newspaper) won the C prize of the 7th Journalism Award on "Party Building and the Political System of Hanoi City", the Second Prize of the Ngo Tat To Journalism Award in 2024 continued to excellently win the A prize of the 9th Golden Hammer and Sickle Award - 2024...
The spread of the Capital's press awards is not only a recognition and honor of the contributions of the press but also shows the companionship of the press in the development of the Capital and the country.
