Recently, an official BYD dealer in the Southern region revealed that the M9 will soon be brought to the country. According to this dealer, the car will officially launch in the Vietnamese market in September or October with an expected price of 1.5 - 1.7 billion VND. If this price is correct, this will be BYD's most expensive car model ever in Vietnam. The BYD M9 MPV is actually the export version of the Xia model currently sold in the Chinese market. The first international market to receive this model is Mexico. The car was officially introduced in the Mexican market on June 25, 2025.
BYD M9 still uses the same chassis platform as Xia. The car has dimensions of length x width x height of 5,145 x 1,970 x 1,805 mm and a wheelbase of 3,045 mm. Compared to Xia for the Chinese market, BYD M9 has been refined in design to suit international customers. Accordingly, the car is equipped with a large radiator grille with vertical or horizontal chrome bars. Besides, there are multi-spoke alloy wheels, traditional door handles and taillights designed across the rear of the car. The rear trunk door is attached with the letter "M9" on the right side and the embossed letter "BYD" under the taillights. In the Mexican market, this large MPV model has equipment such as LED lights from front to rear, electric sliding doors on the side, electric opening/closing trunk door and 18-inch alloy wheels. The car's luggage compartment has a standard volume of 570 liters, increasing to 2,036 liters when the two rear seats are folded. Inside, the M9 features BYD’s latest Dynasty interior design language, inspired by traditional Chinese “Tu Thuy Quy Duong” architecture. The interior is arranged in a dashboard style that surrounds the occupants with color schemes such as brown-beige or blue-gray-beige.
Like BYD's latest models, the M9 is also extremely well-equipped with leather seats, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen that rotates 90 degrees, karaoke function, multi-function artificial leather steering wheel, digital dashboard, 2 business seats in the second row and more than 34 storage compartments. BYD's 3D Smart Cabin system enables Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, split screen for multiple apps at once, 3D modeling for controlling in-car features, remote connectivity via smartphone, and the “Hi BYD” voice control assistant supporting both front rows. The "heart" of the BYD M9 is a plug-in hybrid electric powertrain (PHEV) called DM-i with a 1.5L, turbocharged, 4-cylinder gasoline engine, producing a maximum capacity of 115 horsepower. The engine is combined with a 268-horsepower electric motor. This powertrain produces a total capacity of nearly 400 horsepower and a maximum torque of 474 Nm. BYD claims an average fuel consumption of 17.8 km/l (about 5.6 liters/100 km). Once the 20 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack is fully charged, the car can travel 95 km without using the gasoline engine. The total distance traveled is up to 945 km.
The car's battery can charge from 30% to 80% in 18 minutes and supports VTOL technology, allowing it to power outdoor electronics or even the home grid when needed. In addition, the car also has 4 driving modes, including Normal, Eco, Sport and Snow. Finally, there are notable safety features such as 6 airbags (including curtain airbags for all 3 rows of seats), disc brakes, ABS anti-lock braking system, hydraulic brake assist, deceleration control, traction control, vehicle stability, brake disc drying, anti-rollover, hill start assist and downhill assist. Unfortunately, the car does not have ADAS active safety features. When it comes to Vietnam, BYD M9 will be a competitor of Kia Carnival, GAC M8 and Volkswagen Viloran. In the Chinese market, this model sells quite well with sales of 2,611 units in May 2025. BYD is taking advantage of this growth momentum to promote its international strategy.
