Mr. Nguyen Van Linh with a 40-hectare farm brings in tens of billions of dong in revenue per year.
Despite the scorching hot summer weather, dozens of workers pruning melons are still working hard. Ms. Nguyen Thi Viet, one of the seasonal workers working at the farm, said: “For those of us who are too old to be recruited to work at factories in the Industrial Park, having an income of about 6-7 million VND per month from seasonal work at Mr. Nguyen Van Linh’s family’s farm producing agricultural products is very meaningful. All the work is assigned to us, so we try to do it even in hot weather conditions.”
Witnessing Mr. Nguyen Van Linh's farm, few people know that this place used to be an abandoned "oasis". Originally from Hai Duong province, while trapping birds at Nguyet Ban beach, he realized that this land was favorable for growing vegetables and fruits but was abandoned, which was a waste, so in 2008, he rented the entire area of about 40 hectares to renovate and produce.
Working in construction with a stable income, when he decided to switch to farming, both his wife and children objected because farming has many potential risks, not to mention the difficult farming conditions, but he was still determined to pursue it. Talking to us, he said: "Although it is abandoned land after being exploited to produce handmade bricks, the soil here is very good, with alluvial deposits, so it is suitable for growing short-term crops." Mr. Linh started to improve the land and build a farm.
In early 2009, he started planting the first carrot crop, however, due to heavy rains, the river water rose, causing the entire area to be submerged in water and lost. After this failure, Mr. Linh learned a lesson, the most important thing for farmers is to firmly grasp the principle of "each season has its own food", accordingly, crops such as carrots and sugar beets with a crop period of about 80-90 days are only suitable for winter crop production, while in the rainy season, this place is often flooded, so it is only suitable for short-term crops such as melons and watermelons with a crop period of about 40-45 days.
Sharing more, Mr. Linh said: “Carrots are very suitable for planting on alluvial soil and high alluvial land. Along with the factors of the variety, the stage of treating the soil before planting to ensure it is dry, loose and especially must be treated for pathogens is very important. During the production process, the entire area of the farm only uses organic fertilizers and biological products, the average yield is 2.5-3 tons/sao, the quality and appearance of the tubers are good, the company and traders come to buy at the field”.
Thanks to the compliance with the 3 no process of "no use of pesticides, no use of fertilizers of unknown origin, no drugs in preliminary processing and preservation of products", all agricultural products of the farm always have a place in the market, especially sugar beets and carrots. Currently, each year, the farm produces more than 30 hectares of vegetables and fruits. In addition to consuming for traders to sell at wholesale agricultural markets, each year Mr. Linh exports to the Japanese and Korean markets from 1,500-2,000 tons of various agricultural products, bringing in revenue of nearly ten billion VND, after deducting expenses, he still makes a profit of nearly 1 billion VND/year.
With the results achieved in land accumulation, forming large-scale agricultural commodity farms, creating regular and seasonal jobs for dozens of workers, Mr. Nguyen Van Linh was honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province... for his outstanding achievements in production and business.
