On June 7, information from the Allergy - Respiratory Department, Nghe An General Hospital, patient P.D.N. (81 years old, from Ha Tinh ) is recovering well after endoscopy to remove a foreign object in the bronchus.
The patient had a history of heart failure, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation. Two months ago, Mr. N. suffered a stroke and was treated at a local hospital with motor paralysis, pharyngeal paralysis causing swallowing disorders, and poor cough reflex. The patient was placed with a tracheostomy tube and a nasogastric tube to support breathing and eating.

On June 5, the patient was transferred to Nghe An General Hospital with severe coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and suspected foreign body in the airway. CT scan results showed that there was a foreign body in the patient's main bronchus.
The interdisciplinary team of Allergy - Respiratory, Ear - Nose - Throat and Anesthesia, Nghe An General Hospital performed endoscopy and removed the foreign object, a tooth (size 2x1cm) of the patient.
According to doctors, swallowing disorders caused by paralysis of the throat muscles after a stroke make patients susceptible to choking. This is the reason why the patient's teeth fell out into the airway instead of down the esophagus.
Patient P.D.N. is continuing to be treated at Nghe An General Friendship Hospital.
