Baby girl born with 9 umbilical cords wrapped around her neck

On December 16, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital informed that yesterday, pregnant woman Đ.TML (29 years old), pregnant for the second time, was admitted to the hospital in labor at more than 37 weeks.

During the cesarean section, the team led by Master, Doctor, Associate Professor Nguyen Xuan Hai - Head of the Department of Gynecology and Endocrinology A1 discovered that the baby had 9 umbilical cord loops tightly wrapped around the neck. This was a very dangerous situation, requiring the team to quickly untangle and cut off each umbilical cord loop to rescue the baby.

MSc. BSCKII Nguyen Xuan Hai, who directly performed the cesarean section, shared: “The case of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck so many times is extremely rare. It can reduce blood flow to the fetus, leading to severe malnutrition, and even fetal heart failure at any time. Therefore, the decision to perform a cesarean section in this case was very timely and fortunate for both mother and child.”

Dr. Hai also recommends that pregnant women should have regular check-ups or follow the doctor's appointment and go for a check-up immediately if there are any unusual signs. During labor, if the fetus has the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck, the doctor will advise and monitor the birth to detect any abnormalities early for appropriate treatment.

Previously, there have been many cases of babies being born with multiple umbilical cord loops around their necks, however, cases of babies being born with nine umbilical cord loops around their necks are very rare.

For example, at Bao Son General Hospital, doctors were very surprised when, during a cesarean section, a baby boy weighing 2.6 kg, born to mother PTL (36 years old, Hanoi), was born safely and healthily with a "record" of 5 umbilical cord loops around the neck and 2 loops around the body.

At Moc Chau General Hospital, a 2.6 kg baby boy with 6 umbilical cord loops wrapped around his neck cried out at birth. Luckily, the umbilical cord was not wrapped too tightly so the baby's skin was still rosy and he still cried.

At Can Tho City Maternity Hospital, doctors successfully resuscitated a 3.5 kg baby boy who suffered from acute fetal distress during labor due to the umbilical cord being wrapped around his mother's neck five times...
