
According to CNN, originating from France, the baguette has been recreated by Vietnamese people according to their taste, crossing national borders, becoming global phenomenon
Vietnamese banh mi ranked 6th in the list of 25 best sandwiches in the world in 2025.
"The traditional banh mi version includes roasted pork, pork sausage, pickles, coriander, mayonnaise and other ingredients. You can also find other versions with tofu and lemongrass chicken. The taste is crispy, fresh, rich and extremely delicious" - CNN introduces.
Topping the list is the Bocadillo de Jamón Ibérico, a classic Spanish sandwich. According to CNN, this dish is simple and delicious, the star here is Spain's prized Iberian ham, thinly sliced and served on crusty bread, brushed with extra virgin olive oil. Fresh tomatoes and cheese can also be added.

The Ibérico ham sandwiched in this sandwich is made from free-range Iberian black pigs fed on acorns, giving it a distinctive, rich and irresistibly delicious flavor.
Coming in second is torta ahogada - the most popular street food in Guadalajara, Mexico. Minced pork is sandwiched into a crispy bread, then covered in a spicy red sauce.


Third is the Italian tramezzini. Although it originated in Turin, Venice has taken this popular lunchtime snack to a whole new level. The triangular white bread is filled with olives and tuna, boiled eggs, vegetables, lots of ham and mushrooms.

Also in the top 25 are shawarma (Middle East), pambazo (Mexico), muffaletta and po'boy (New Orleans, USA), chivito (Uruguay), pan bagnat (France), katsu sando (Japan), smørrebrød (Denmark), spatlo (South Africa), Montreal smoked meat sandwich (Canada), lobster roll (New England, USA), Broodje haring (Netherlands), croque monsieur (France)...
Bread was born in the 1950s, with its ancestor being the baguette brought to Vietnam by the French. Over time, the Vietnamese invented a bread with a crispy crust but a hollow and soft inside. In 2009, the late chef Anthony Bourdain - one of the world's most influential culinary experts - gave many compliments to banh mi on CNN's No Reservation program.

In 2013, Vietnamese bread was voted by the famous magazine National Geographic as one of the top 11 best street foods in the world.
In 2016, this popular dish, along with bun cha and pho, was included in the list of 100 world famous dishes, jointly announced by the World Record Alliance - Wordkings and the World Top Institute.
In February 2023, Taste Atlas, a website known as the "world cuisine map", announced the 50 best street foods in the world, in which Vietnamese banh mi ranked 6th.
To date, March 24 has been chosen as Vietnamese Bread Day, commemorating the milestone of the word “banh mi” being added to the Oxford dictionary, to honor the achievements and values that Vietnamese bread has brought./.
