"It is a bronze plate with an outstretched right hand and strange writing on the back," said Dr Mattin Aiestaran, director of the excavation. Photo: @University of Barcelona. Its patina contains 53.19% tin, 40.87% copper and 2.16% lead, which is a common composition in very old alloys, this alloy dates back about 2,000 years. Photo: @University of Barcelona.
The Irulegi hand contains 40 symbols distributed over four lines, which can correspond to five or more words. Photo: @University of Barcelona. The first word, 'sorioneku', is very similar to the modern Basque word 'zorioneko' (which means 'lucky'). Photo: @University of Barcelona. "We could understand the first word, 'sorioneku', but we still couldn't decipher the next words," said Professor Joaquín Gorrochategui from the University of the Basque Country. It is likely that this artifact was designed to be hung on a door, possibly as an amulet. Photo: @University of Barcelona.
