On the morning of July 12, the scientific workshop 'Strategies for managing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases: From recommendations to clinical practice' was held at Gia An 115 Hospital, providing important information in treating patients.
With 4 reports focusing on the topics: Chronic coronary syndrome, hypertension and type 2 diabetes, the conference updated domestic and international recommendations; at the same time emphasized the implementation of personalized treatment, focusing on the patient.
Cardiovascular disease should be detected and controlled before chest pain occurs.
According to Professor - Doctor - Physician Dang Van Phuoc, Vice President of the Vietnam Cardiology Association, the cause contributing to chest pain and some heart function problems is half due to microcirculation.

“Microcirculatory dysfunction can lead to myocardial ischemia. Therefore, even if the coronary artery test results are normal, the patient may still have myocardial ischemia. Chest pain and shortness of breath are two symptoms that always need to be carefully screened. To better control the condition before the onset of chest pain, the patient may be prescribed an echocardiogram to detect systolic and diastolic dysfunction. This helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction,” said Professor Dang Van Phuoc.
Complications from diabetes can come on very quickly.
In the report “Comprehensive Approach to Type 2 Diabetes Treatment: From Recommendations to Clinical Practice”, Associate Professor - Doctor - Doctor Nguyen Thi Bich Dao, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Diabetes and Endocrinology Association, said that according to the results of a study in the medical journal The Lancet (UK), there will be about 828 million adults with type 2 diabetes globally in 2022; a 4-fold increase compared to 1990. Meanwhile, the treatment coverage rate remains low, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Therefore, according to Associate Professor Bich Dao, 4 things need to be done at the same time to control diabetes, including: Managing blood sugar, blood pressure, blood lipids, and using drugs that are beneficial for the kidneys and cardiovascular system.
“When first diagnosed with diabetes, 12.3% of patients have chronic kidney complications. The time to detect other complications is about 3-5.2 years - much shorter than what we usually think. Therefore, earlier intervention is needed to limit complications. Risk factors that we can intervene include smoking and high blood pressure - which are related to chronic kidney and cardiovascular complications of diabetes,” Dr. Bich Dao emphasized.
Mistakes in measuring blood pressure in the treatment of hypertension
Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Ly Van Chieu, Director of Cardiovascular Center, Cho Ray Hospital, shares the 5D strategy (blood pressure measurement, comprehensive assessment, individualized treatment, treatment response, full compliance) in managing hypertension.

In particular, measuring blood pressure according to standards is extremely important in diagnosing and treating high blood pressure. Patients should be responsible and aware of monitoring their blood pressure health at home. The following mistakes when measuring blood pressure at home or in the clinic are pointed out by doctors:
- Talking can increase blood pressure by 4-19 mmHg.
- The first cigarette of the day can increase blood pressure by 20 mmHg.
- Arms should be kept straight; Using a cuff that is too small can increase blood pressure readings by 5-20 mmHg.
- Sitting with your feet flat on the floor or leaning back in a chair can increase blood pressure by 5 mmHg.
- A full bladder can increase blood pressure by 4-33 mmHg.
- A cuff worn over a sleeve can increase blood pressure by 3-5 mmHg.
- Drinking coffee within 30 minutes before measuring blood pressure; Sitting cross-legged can increase blood pressure by 3-15 mmHg.
“Active blood pressure control not only helps hypertensive patients stay healthier, but also helps reduce the risk of stroke by 41% in diabetic patients,” said Dr. Van Chieu.
