The Departmentof Education and Training (DET) of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has just sent a document to the principals of high schools, directors of continuing education centers, and heads of education and training departments of districts, towns, and cities to conduct a survey on students in the province to have Saturdays off during the week.

Accordingly, based on documents and circulars, the current High School Continuing Education Program stipulates that students in grades 6 and 7 have an average of 29 periods/week; students in grades 8 and 9 have an average of 29.5 periods/week; students in grades 10, 11 and 12 have an average of 29 periods/week (all excluding elective subjects such as ethnic languages and second foreign languages); and Continuing Education has an average of 28.5 periods/week.

Many parents and students agree with the survey that school is closed on Saturdays.

To have a basis for advising the Provincial People's Committee in implementing the implementation of students having Saturday off school. The Department of Education and Training guides relevant units to report on the conditions of facilities, classrooms, and teaching staff of the unit when implementing 2 sessions/week to arrange for students and teachers to have Saturday off. Deploy to all leaders, teachers and staff, students and parents to conduct a 100% survey as a basis for consultation.

Faced with this information, many parents said they strongly support giving high school students Saturdays off. Ms. Hoang Thi Nhi (Ba Ria City) said: "My child is already too tired after studying 6 days a week, so I want him to have more time to play and participate in other activities with the family on Saturday."

However, some opinions are still concerned about how to arrange time to have 29 periods/week without the program being too heavy for 1 day if Saturday is off, besides, parents still go to work but children stay at home, lacking supervision.

Previously, 7 other localities in the country including Phu Tho, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Hanoi , Ha Tinh City, Nha Trang City, Vinh City are piloting teaching 5 days/week, giving students the entire Saturday and Sunday off.
