Ani Choying Drolma - Namo Ratna (Great Compassion Mantra)
Music can soothe a troubled mind
* Madam, perhaps many Vietnamese people have heard you sing a lot on the Internet, but have not had the opportunity to hear you sing live. How do you feel about coming to Vietnam this time?
- Thank you for helping me realize that my music can reach your country, the hearts of the people here.
That is the only reason why I feel happy to accept the invitation to perform in Vietnam.
I accepted the invitation with great joy and great enthusiasm. I was very excited to bring my music here.
My biggest purpose in life is to find a way to make this life truly meaningful.
I use music as a means to convey the wisdom and teachings of Buddha to people, wherever I am, and especially this time in Vietnam. That is why I feel my life is full of meaning and full of blessings.
I am looking forward to sharing my music with the Vietnamese audience. I am happy to feel the warm welcome from your country.

* What will you bring to the audience in the next two concerts?
- When you see me meditate and sing at the same time, the experience is much deeper and more touching.
Om Mani Padme Hum or Namo Ratna are the mantras of Avalokiteshvara, containing all the blessings and powers that help awaken the compassionate qualities that are already present within you, and bring them out more strongly in your life.
From there, you will not only learn to love others, but first of all, yourself. That is the most beautiful thing I look forward to: seeing the smile on your face and in your heart. And I know I will receive that blessing too.
Music has the quality and power to soothe a troubled mind. The inner peace of the singer becomes pure energy that radiates through the music to the listener.
Today, science has also proven that music not only helps people relax, but also affects animals and plants. Plants grow better when listening to music.

If compassion no longer exists…
* What do you think about the need of people around the world today: to balance body - mind - spirit with love?
- I think this is the most important thing. We are facing countless climate crises around the world: natural disasters, floods, earthquakes, fires…

Scientists and experts say it is the result of industrialization, overconsumption, overuse of plastic, and disrespect for nature.
We are advised to use renewable energy, go green. All of these are true and necessary.
But I believe that at the root of the climate crisis is a spiritual crisis.
We are increasingly materializing, and losing our sacred respect for nature, including both external nature and internal nature - the fundamental qualities within human beings.
The most beautiful quality within a human being is compassion. It is a liberating force and also a vital element for human survival. I believe that compassion is the only answer for survival, not only for humans, but also for animals, nature, and all species.
If compassion is no longer present in our hearts, if we become numb, operating like machines… then the future of humanity is really in danger. Therefore, it is important to cultivate compassion. I choose to do that through music.
* Nowadays, young people tend to look inward, to seek a healthy spiritual life, what do you think?
- This is a very timely moment. Modern society today makes people move away from core values, and only focus on material things that can be measured.
We need to return to love for people, for all creatures, for nature. As for things like phones, laptops, TVs, they are just tools to be used, not to be loved. It’s simple, right? Just a little bit of simple conscience and a little bit of ordinary kindness.
Ani Choying Drolma was born in 1970 in Boudha, Kathmandu, Nepal. At the age of 13, she was a famous mantra chanter at Nagi Gompa monastery on Mount Shivapuri, north of Kathmandu valley.
Her singing talent was first discovered by American guitarist Steve Tibbetts while he was visiting Nepal. With Steve's help, her debut album Cho was released internationally in 1997.
Since then, she has become a prominent name in the world music scene. She has toured the US and Europe, introducing traditional Nepali music and mantra chanting to the world.
In addition, she has made great contributions to social activities for women and children in Nepal.
