76 centralized water supply works in rural areas are not operating.

Việt NamViệt Nam09/09/2024

Up to now, in the rural areas of Quang Tri province, there are 203 centralized water supply works; of which 34 works operate sustainably; 53 works operate relatively sustainably; 40 works operate unsustainably and 76 works are not operating. Currently, 135 works have been handed over to the People's Committees of communes for management, use and exploitation.

For inactive and ineffective projects, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is reviewing and classifying centralized rural clean water infrastructure assets to develop a plan for asset allocation, management, and exploitation according to Decree No. 43/2022/ND-CP dated June 24, 2022 of the Government. It is expected to propose liquidation of inactive projects and ineffective projects that cannot be repaired or remedied.

Some of the current difficulties and problems in rural clean water supply in Quang Tri province are the increasingly complex situation of pollution, depletion and degradation of water resources, affecting the sustainability of projects and difficulties in ensuring water quality, especially small-scale projects.

On the other hand, resources for regular maintenance and upkeep of rural water supply works have not received due attention, leading to rapid deterioration and inefficiency of the works, and even their cessation after a short period of use.

In particular, centralized rural water supply projects in mountainous areas have high investment costs, but are not very sustainable due to frequent impacts of natural disasters causing landslides and silting damage to the projects.

It is known that in Quang Tri province, by the end of 2023, the rate of rural households using hygienic water reached 96.71% (an increase of 2.38% compared to 2021); the rate of rural households using clean water meeting national technical standards reached 64.69% (an increase of 5.27% compared to 2021).
