3 warning signs of type 1 diabetes that should not be ignored

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên11/09/2024

While type 2 diabetes mainly occurs in middle-aged and elderly people, type 1 diabetes occurs more in children and young people. Both types of diabetes cause the body to not secrete enough insulin or use insulin effectively, causing glucose in the blood to not be transported into cells. The result is increased blood sugar, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Persistent fatigue in children may be a sign of type 1 diabetes

Experts say diagnosing type 1 diabetes can be difficult, especially in children. Although there is no cure, the disease can be effectively controlled. It is important to detect it early when it is in its early stages. Warning signs of type 1 diabetes include:

Dark patches of skin appear

One of the warning signs of diabetes is the appearance of dark patches of skin, especially around the neck, armpits or groin. This condition is called acanthosis nigricans.

The dark patches may be widespread or confined to skin folds. The skin in these dark patches may also be smoother or thicker. This is because high levels of insulin in the blood cause skin cells to reproduce more quickly than normal.

Recurrent infections

Diabetes weakens the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infection. Children with type 1 diabetes, if left untreated, may be more susceptible to skin infections, such as boils or fungal infections of the skin.

Furthermore, when there is too much glucose in the blood, it is more difficult for white blood cells to move through the bloodstream. This reduces the body's ability to fight off infectious agents.

Tired

One of the less recognized signs of type 1 diabetes in children is unusual fatigue. It is normal for children to feel tired after a long day of playing.

However, if your child's fatigue is persistent and unexplained, it could be a sign of an underlying illness, including type 1 diabetes. The disease prevents glucose in the blood from entering cells to be converted into energy, which makes the body tired, according to Healthline .
