According to Master Le Hong Thinh - Head of the Laboratory Department, Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, each year the hospital receives about 33,000 pregnant women for prenatal check-ups, of which 49% of pregnant women come from provinces in the region. The implementation of prenatal and neonatal screening and diagnosis is very important, part of the strategy to improve population quality.

Mr. Le Thanh Dung - Director of the Department of Population - emphasized that the Ministry of Health is very interested in the prenatal and newborn screening program.

The goal is to screen for early detection and intervention of fetal malformations and deformities through prenatal screening, and to detect and treat early genetic metabolic diseases through newborn screening.

According to the Center for Prenatal and Neonatal Screening and Diagnosis of Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, prenatal and neonatal screening is currently developing strongly. At Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital alone, the rate of prenatal screening in pregnant women is 97%, in 12 provinces in the region, this rate is about 50% of pregnant women coming for examination.

Regarding newborn screening, 100% of newborns at Can Tho City Obstetrics Hospital are fully screened. In 12 provinces in the Mekong Delta region, the rate of newborns screened is over 70%.

According to the Department of Population, promoting the development of prenatal screening and congenital diseases in children helps detect and treat high-risk cases early, contributing to reducing birth defects and improving population quality.

At the same time, congenital diseases in children, if diagnosed early, will help with timely treatment and ensure healthy development for the child.
