Overcoming injury, Alcaraz still wins quickly at US Open

Carlos Alcaraz overcame his third challenge at the 2025 US Open by defeating Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the fourth round. Despite a slight wobble in the second set, the Spaniard still showed his mettle to continue his journey to conquer the championship.

After leading by a set and 4-1 in the second set, Alcaraz unexpectedly lost his first break point of the tournament this year. After an unfavorable landing on his serve in the ninth game (5-4), the 22-year-old had to seek medical attention for his right knee. However, he quickly regained his form, winning 7 consecutive games to finish the match after 1 hour and 44 minutes.

“I feel fine, I asked the physiotherapist just as a precaution. When he broke my serve, on the last point, I felt something in my knee, but after 5 or 6 points it was gone. I asked the physiotherapist to take care of my knee, so I should feel fine. I will talk to my team about it, but I feel fine,” Alcaraz assured fans about his health condition.

The 2022 US Open champion is still on course to face Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Alcaraz will next face France's Arthur Rinderknech in the fourth round. Rinderknech came from behind to beat compatriot Benjamin Bonzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. Alcaraz now leads Rinderknech 3-0 in the head-to-head series.

Despite some lapses in the second set, Alcaraz was excellent in every aspect, especially his consistent forehand serve. However, Darderi also created his own moments, including a spectacular play that gave him two break points, which he eventually converted to break the game.

Alcaraz said of the morning match in the US: “I tried to wake up fresh, that was important. Starting at 11:30 in the morning is not my usual schedule, so my first goal was to start well, to be focused. I think I started very well, pushing him to the limit, playing long balls, and then continuing to maintain my form.

I am not a morning person. It is very difficult for me to wake up in the morning, so I was lucky to wake up early today, warm up well, play well. It was like I was a Spanish guy!”

With 57 wins and a Tour-leading six titles this year, Alcaraz is neck-and-neck with fierce rival Jannik Sinner for the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings. The Spaniard could reclaim the spot for the first time since September 2023 if he matches or surpasses Sinner’s record in New York.

Sinner is unbeaten in hard-court Grand Slams since 2024, is in the top half of the draw and can only face Alcaraz in the final.
