The ancient Cheo play "Quan Am Thi Kinh" returns to the capital's audience

“Quan Am Thi Kinh”, one of the seven ancient Cheo plays - seven precious gems of traditional Vietnamese Cheo theater that need to be passed down, was performed by the Hanoi Cheo Theater at Dai Nam Theater (89 Hue Street, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi) on the evening of June 20, with a performance bearing the mark of a young artist.

The performance of Hanoi Cheo Theatre has its own appeal with the compilation, editing, and staging of author, director, and poet Tran Huyen Tran - Head of the Kim Lan classical opera troupe (the predecessor of Hanoi Cheo Theatre). People's Artist Tran Quoc Chiem, who took on the role of restoring the play, also had certain innovations that contributed to increasing the appeal of "Quan Am Thi Kinh".

Participating in this performance are talented young artists, such as Hong Van (as Thi Mau), Quang Truong (as Thien Sy), Le Dat (as Mang Ong). In addition, the play also features the "veterans" of the theater such as People's Artist Thanh Loan (as Sung Ba), Meritorious Artist Quoc Phong (as Xa Truong), Nam Cuong (as Sung Ong), Truc Mai (as Me Dop), Xuan Huynh (as No), Hong Tham (as Thi Kinh)... In particular, two excellent young comedians of the theater, Khac Huy (as Cu Thay), Xuan Dung (as Cu Do Diec) will bring joyful laughter to the audience.

Playing the role of Thien Sy, young artist Quang Truong expressed: “For a Cheo actor, being assigned classic roles in classic works is an honor and also a dream in everyone's career. I am fortunate to be assigned many classic roles by the theater leadership, which is a joy, pride but also a lot of pressure because to play a classic role, the artist not only has to act correctly, sing correctly but also has to be creative to make their own mark. There is nothing like reality, every time the curtain closes, I feel myself growing up, extremely emotional”.

People's Artist Thanh Loan - one of the artists who played the impressive role of Sung Ba in the Vietnamese Cheo scene shared: "As a senior generation, when performing with the younger generation, I not only seriously complete the role, but also pay attention to the acting of each young person to "follow" and encourage their spirit". According to People's Artist Thanh Loan, veteran artists must both perform and guide, so that the younger generation can confidently immerse themselves in the stage space. Therefore, the young artists of the Hanoi Cheo Theater progress very quickly, ready to follow the previous generation.

Hanoi Cheo Theatre once made a big splash with the play “Quan Am Thi Kinh” 20 years ago with a cast of all “stars” such as People’s Artist Quoc Chiem (as the Master), Meritorious Artist Xuan Hinh (as the Master), People’s Artist Thuy Mui (Mother Dop), People’s Artist Quoc Anh (as the Village Chief), People’s Artist Thu Huyen (Thi Mau), People’s Artist Thanh Loan (Sung Ba), Meritorious Artist Hong Nam (Thien Sy), Meritorious Artist Quoc Thuan (Mang Ong), Meritorious Artist Thu Ha (as Thi Kinh)…

However, in this version, the young artists “breathe” into it a “new wind” of today. They are new from face, voice to style. Therefore, this new version of “Quan Am Thi Kinh” by Hanoi Cheo Theater still has a strong traditional character but is also youthful, suitable for today’s audience.
