Vietnam and ASEAN support strengthening international cooperation in preventing transnational crimes

Overview of the event.

On November 13, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the United States, a high-level event was held by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the occasion of the International Day against All Forms of Transnational Organized Crime.

The event was attended by many representatives of United Nations member countries and a number of relevant international and regional organizations.

At the event, most opinions shared concerns about the risks posed by transnational organized crime to international peace , security and sustainable development, negative impacts on stability and social cohesion in many countries, requiring increased international and regional cooperation to address these challenges.

Speaking about regional response efforts, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, said that organized transnational crime is a major obstacle to peace, security and development in Southeast Asia, of which the most serious are drug trafficking, human trafficking and cybercrime.

In responding to these pressing issues, international cooperation plays an essential role, complementing national efforts.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang highlighted ASEAN's efforts and achievements in combating transnational crimes, coordinating with partners to address issues such as terrorism, extreme violence, human trafficking, cybercrime, etc.

On this occasion, the Head of the Vietnamese Delegation also shared a number of recommendations to promote regional initiatives in this field, including capacity building and training for law enforcement forces; supporting technology and infrastructure to help ASEAN countries monitor and respond effectively to increasingly sophisticated criminal networks; enhancing the harmonization of laws of countries in the region to facilitate cooperation and coordination; raising public awareness of types of crime, mobilizing people and communities to participate in crime prevention.

The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam and ASEAN are ready to cooperate with all partners in preventing transnational crimes for a safe and healthy environment for all people.
