All 5 students of the Vietnamese national team participating in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2025 won medals, with 1 Gold Medal and 4 Silver Medals. With this result, Vietnam entered the top 10 countries with the best achievements at the competition.
This is the information just announced by the Ministry of Education and Training this morning, July 24.
The Gold Medal went to Nguyen The Quan, a 12th grade student at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Nghe An province.
The students who won Silver Medals include Ly Ba Khoi and Truong Duc Dung (both 12th graders, High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences , University of Natural Sciences , Vietnam National University, Hanoi), Nguyen Cong Vinh (12th grader, Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, Bac Ninh province) and Tran Le Thien Nhan (12th grader, Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted, Hue city).
The 55th International Physics Olympiad was held in France from July 17 to 25. The competition had the participation of 94 delegations (including 5 observer delegations) from 94 countries and territories with 406 contestants.
The exam consists of two official days: one day of theory and one day of practical, each test has a duration of 5 hours.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the theoretical and experimental exams demonstrate a subtle combination of modern physics and familiar practical phenomena, from the structure of hydrogen atoms to the structure of galaxies, from the oscillation of magnets to the formation of meteorite craters. The problem of the formation of bubbles in a glass of champagne not only has profound physics significance (related to pressure, acoustics, viscous friction, etc.) but is also a unique cultural highlight, bringing French culinary traditions into the IPhO exam.

The experimental test consisted of two problems, requiring synthetic thinking and precise measurement skills. One involved “landing and moving safely, avoiding getting bogged down in sand dunes on the surface of Mars of the rover”, the other used a Gouy balance to measure magnetic moments and was a meaningful reference to the French physicist Louis Georges Gouy, who made many contributions to the study of magnetism and optics, expressing gratitude to the French scientific heritage at the international competition held in his homeland.
The closing ceremony and announcement of the IPhO 2025 results will take place at 9:00 p.m. tonight, July 24, and will be broadcast live on the official YouTube channel of IPhO 2025: https://www.youtube.com/@InternationalPhysicsOlympiad25./.
Vietnam first participated in the International Physics Olympiad in 1981 and in the following years had quite modest achievements. Since 2001, Vietnam's results in the International Physics Olympiad began to improve with a higher frequency of winning Gold medals. The best achievements of the Vietnam International Physics Olympiad team were in 2008 and 2017 with 4 Gold medals. In 2024, Vietnam won 2 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, with 1 Gold medal and 4 Silver medals, the Vietnamese delegation is in the top ten countries with the highest results at IPhO 2025. This achievement continues the series of impressive results that Vietnamese student delegations have achieved at international and regional Olympic competitions over the past many years.
The results of the Vietnamese team at this year's exam continue to affirm the quality of general education as well as the right direction in discovering, selecting and nurturing talented and excellent students./.
