In the Dien Bien Phu campaign, our main force consisted of 3 divisions and 1 infantry regiment. According to the initial battle plan, in 3 days and 2 nights, Division 312 commanded by General Le Trong Tan had to continuously break through 3 strong enemy defense lines from the North to Muong Thanh. It was an extremely difficult task and he completed it.
While the officers and soldiers were eagerly waiting for the order to open fire, on the afternoon of January 26, 1954, the Division received orders to stop firing according to the original plan, changing from "fight fast, win fast" to "fight steady, advance steady". General Le Trong Tan had to explain to the soldiers this sudden decision, and then pull the artillery back.
The 312th Division was then assigned by the General Command to destroy the Him Lam stronghold cluster to open the campaign. After this victory, the division continued to be ordered to follow the enemy closely to seize the opportunity for a general attack. On the afternoon of May 7, 1954, a unit of the 312th Division attacked the French Command Center, capturing General De Castries and the General Staff of the Dien Bien Phu stronghold cluster.
