Why did coach Ten Hag fail?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên09/11/2023

Overall, MU has no significant style of play, tactics, or strategy. They cannot create scoring opportunities, and shoot less than really mediocre teams, such as FC Copenhagen in the Champions League this morning (November 9) or Fulham in the Premier League last weekend. They can win or lose, as a random thing that is the biggest characteristic of football, but they leave absolutely no mark of a coach - as if it were a chaotic team without a coach. They cannot even do the basic things that need to be done, which are the minimum requirements for a coach. Leading or being led; having or not having the ball... what to do? There is no answer - although "casual" football players will immediately have the answer, in theory.

What terrible things are happening to coach Ten Hag and his team?

Only Ten Hag's MU has led twice in a match and still lost, against an opponent who is considered a team that is considered a weak team in the Champions League. 2-0 in less than half an hour, then 3-2 with only 7 minutes left, but lost 3-4 and dropped to the bottom of the table. Coach Erik Ten Hag complained after the match, that his players should have known what to do to protect the score. Oh, should the coach be criticized? Substitutions and switching to safe tactics, slowing down the tempo, playing in the middle of the field, even... fouling from afar, all are the work of the coaching bench!

In fact, Ten Hag is far superior to his predecessors. Apart from having worn the MU shirt during the most glorious years of the team, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has never coached top-level football, and it must be said that he is not a real coach. Ralf Rangnick is even worse. This character who specializes in preaching far-fetched philosophies is also a bit of a hoax, not a coach. On the contrary, Ten Hag has reaped quite a few championship titles during his 5 years leading Ajax Amsterdam. He came to MU in a context where the club was completely broken in terms of expertise, and initially succeeded in both important areas: bringing convincing gameplay as well as good results.

Mr. Ten Hag's bewildered face

Difference: Last season's success for United was tied to the excellence of midfielder Casemiro and centre-back Lisandro Martínez. This season, Lisandro Martínez is absent due to injury (as is full-back Luke Shaw, who was also excellent last season). Casemiro has lost his form. Ten Hag is not good at reading people. He puts his faith in players that United should have discarded (like Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans), or should only use as a reserve, like Marcus Rashford. Motivate Rashford to always try his best, who would give this unreliable player a key role!

English football is much more brutal than Ten Hag’s Dutch football. On the one hand, he himself was unable to cope with the risk of obsolescence. On the other hand, the players that Ten Hag bought (mainly from the Dutch market) were not effective. The crisis of force (mainly due to injuries) pushed MU to the brink of collapse, and instead of rescuing the team, coach Ten Hag was dragged into the common failure by MU.
