
On the afternoon of June 28, the People's Committee of Lang Son province held a ceremony to receive the title of UNESCO Global Geopark Lang Son.
This title marks an important turning point for Lang Son province to join the UNESCO Global Geopark Network of 229 destinations in 50 countries around the world .
Presenting the Certificate of Recognition of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Lang Son to the leaders of Lang Son province, Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker, Chief Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Vietnam, emphasized that the Global Geopark is a typical model where people live in harmony with nature, minimize negative impacts, improve livelihoods, and promote socio-economic development.
With its unique values, Lang Son Geopark helps us understand more about the evolutionary process over millions and tens of millions of years, understanding these values is very important for life and the future. Research on the values of life, geological formation through the formation and evolution of the Geopark helps countries come up with ways to respond to challenges caused by natural disasters such as climate change.
“Nature is our common heritage and the foundation of long-term peace, so we need to work together to protect it,” affirmed Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Ngo Le Van, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations, said that the Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark is a clear demonstration of the efforts to preserve and promote Vietnamese cultural heritage along with intangible cultural heritages such as the Mother Goddess worship and Then singing of the Tay, Nung and Thai people.
To promote the value of heritages and Geoparks, Mr. Ngo Le Van hopes that localities will integrate sustainable development principles into the management and operation of Geoparks to ensure harmony and development. Geological, cultural and ecological values need to be strictly protected to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the community.
According to the Master Plan of Action for the Development of UNESCO Global Geoparks for the period 2025 - 2030, Lang Son will review and complete the conservation and sustainable development planning of the Geopark area, traffic infrastructure connecting heritage sites, ensuring favorable conditions for visitors and researchers to access.
The province strengthens research, survey, digitization, and systematization of geological, cultural, and ecological values to build a synchronous database, serve conservation and promotion; build and develop typical tourism products associated with local identity, combining geological - cultural - historical - culinary values.
The province fully complies with UNESCO criteria, ensuring the management, conservation and development of the Geopark in line with the orientation of sustainable, inclusive and responsible development towards the community; strengthening international and domestic cooperation, learning from experiences of successful global geopark models; building appropriate support mechanisms and policies, promoting the active and proactive participation of the business community and social organizations.
Lang Son Geopark was recognized as a Global Geopark by the Geopark Council in September 2024 and officially recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark by UNESCO in April 2025, becoming the 4th Global Geopark in Vietnam after Dong Van Stone Plateau, Cao Bang Non Nuoc and Dak Nong Geopark.
Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark was established in 2021; covering an area of over 4,842 km2, with a population of about 627,500 people (equivalent to about 58% of the area and 78% of the province's population).
Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark is considered a gem in the mountainous region of Northern Vietnam. Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark possesses unique geological heritage values of international stature, with a system of majestic caves and unique sinkholes.
Places such as Nguom Mooc Cave, Tham Lum Sinkhole and Ung Roac Sinkhole not only have scientific significance but also attract tourists, especially those with a passion for exploration and adventure.
Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark also has a diverse ecosystem with many rare species of flora and fauna at Huu Lien Nature Reserve.
Within the Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark area, there are many unique historical and cultural relics, creating a harmonious combination of geological, biological and cultural values.
Currently, Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark has formed 4 tourist routes with 38 attractive attractions to help visitors have unforgettable experiences.
