China's defeat took place within the framework of the East Asian Football Championship (EAFF Cup). This football tournament was established in 2003 and is held every 2-3 years.
China has won the EAFF Cup twice, in 2005 and 2010. This achievement is mainly due to the fact that South Korea and Japan only sent second-team squads to the tournament. The two giants of Asian football almost never call back their stars playing abroad to participate in the EAFF Cup.
Likewise, in this year's tournament, Korea only used players who were playing in the domestic championship. All stars such as Son Heung Min, Lee Kang In... were absent in the opening match against China.
However, the second team of Korea was still too strong for China. It only took them 8 minutes to score the opening goal (by Lee Dong Gyeong). By the 56th minute, the score was 3-0.
"They scored early and played very coherently, which put a lot of pressure on us," said China coach Dejan Durdevic, who took over as interim coach after Ivankovic was fired last month.
"This is not the right time to analyze the match in depth. We need to make sure our players will be ready for the next match. Some players cannot participate in this match due to injuries," coach Durdevic added.
This is the fourth defeat in the last five matches of the Chinese team, causing them to sink deeper into crisis.
Losing to a giant like South Korea is usually not a bad thing. But South Korea only used their second team, and the fact that China lost without any resistance made Chinese fans once again disappointed with their team.
The EAFF Cup finals will feature four teams, including South Korea, Japan, China and Hong Kong. The tournament will be played in a round-robin format from July 7 to July 15.
