On the morning of August 28, Man Utd suffered a huge shock when they were defeated on the field of the English 4th division team Grimsby in the second round of the English League Cup. According to statistics, this is the first time in history that the Red Devils have been eliminated by an opponent from such a low league in the domestic cup in England.

At Blundell Park, Man Utd let their opponents lead 2-0 and then, they had to rely on the brilliance of two players Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire to drag the match to a penalty shootout. However, after a nerve-wracking match that lasted 18 minutes, coach Ruben Amorim and his team suffered a humiliating defeat.
If the lackluster performance on the pitch disappointed fans, Amorim’s behavior off the pitch was even more infuriating. Television cameras captured the Portuguese tactician still engrossed in testing tactics on the control board when his team was two goals down. Not stopping there, when it came to the penalty shootout, he was accused of “avoiding” it by sitting deep in the coaching cabin, barely daring to look at the players taking the decisive kick.
On social media, a wave of backlash erupted. Many fans called coach Amorim a “coward” and demanded his immediate dismissal. One person wrote: “I cannot accept a coach who avoids watching his team take a penalty against a fourth-tier opponent. If he doesn’t change, he should leave.”
Another wrote: “Is he playing checkers while Man Utd are losing?”.

A third person angrily said: “I think Man Utd should have decided to sack him before Amorim got on the bus and left the pitch. I cannot forgive him.”
The next person suspected that coach Amorim "pretended to be busy" to cover up his weakness.
Another fan continued: “It really hurts me to see the manager scared to watch his players take penalties against a fourth-tier team. Please leave Man Utd immediately!”
Another added: “A coach who doesn’t dare watch his team play a penalty shootout against a tiny opponent. I don’t understand what he’s thinking. He’s a real coward.”
After the match, coach Amorim also admitted that this defeat was a wake-up call for the whole team. He said: “From the beginning of the match, we lost all concentration, had no intensity and let the opponent dominate. I can only say sorry to the fans. Today, the stronger team won.”
The 40-year-old strategist repeatedly emphasized that “the players have spoken for themselves with their performances on the pitch”, implying that the spirit and attitude of his students are no longer on his side. Amorim admitted: “This is the limit, something needs to change. I take responsibility for this failure”.
The pressure on Amorim is now at its peak. He has won just one of his last seven games in all competitions, a win rate of over 37% since taking charge of Man Utd. This weekend’s clash with Burnley at Old Trafford will likely decide his future at the Theatre of Dreams.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the front line, coach David Artell could not hide his pride: “This is the result of more than 15 months of effort. We defeated a great club, with a good coach and are on the right track. My players have given everything for Grimsby and deserve to be honored.”
