Counterfeit and fake goods are being pushed back as authorities have launched a crackdown.
After a peak month from May 15 to June 16, under the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh , the authorities arrested and handled more than 10,836 cases of smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods (an increase of 79.34% compared to the previous peak month); collected nearly 1,300 billion VND for the state budget (an increase of 258.43% compared to the previous peak month); temporarily detained goods and exhibits worth an estimated over 4,075 billion VND (not including the temporarily detained goods of drugs, banned goods, counterfeit goods); prosecuted more than 200 cases with 378 defendants...
In the first 6 months of the year, Steering Committee 389 and functional forces arrested and handled nearly 50,000 cases of smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, and tax fraud; collected nearly 6,500 billion VND for the state budget; prosecuted 1,899 criminal cases with 3,271 defendants...
Surely these numbers would have increased if many cheap fashion and cosmetic stores at Ninh Hiep, Dong Xuan, Hang Dao, Chua Boc markets in Hanoi and Saigon Square in Ho Chi Minh City had not closed in time during the month of crackdown on counterfeit goods.
Under the guise of famous, high-quality brands, counterfeit goods openly exist on many products such as food, clothing, cosmetics, nutritional products, functional foods, watches, etc. on a serious scale, lasting for many years and becoming a chronic disease of the Vietnamese market.
These products are advertised and sold on social networks, displayed at traditional markets, Ninh Hiep and Dong Xuan wholesale markets, or major streets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The common point of counterfeit and fake goods is four no's: No invoice, unknown origin, unknown quality and absolutely no quality control.
As a result, consumers face the risk of losing their health and even their lives. Many people have to swallow the bitter pill, suffer losses and cannot protect their own rights when buying these four-no products.
Not only causing consequences for consumers, counterfeit goods also cause unfair competition in the market, causing many legitimate businesses to lose market share.
From a market perspective, the existence of counterfeit goods distorts the business environment and reduces the confidence of consumers and businesses.
Although the work of preventing and combating smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods has achieved many positive results in the past, in reality there are still many shortcomings. The legal system is not yet consistent and outdated. State management is still overlapping and lax, especially in licensing, testing food production and post-inspection. Along with that, the responsibility of some local leaders and functional forces is not high, inspection and supervision are not regular, there are even signs of assisting and covering up violators.
Besides, due to the mentality of preferring foreign goods and being greedy for cheap prices, many consumers rush to buy and use these 4-no products without knowing that they are helping fake and counterfeit goods to exist and thrive.
The general attack on counterfeit and fake goods by the authorities is receiving the sympathy and support of people nationwide. This campaign not only protects consumers, but also creates a healthy business environment, attracting genuine businesses to confidently invest in expanding production and business.
The drastic intervention of the authorities in recent times shows that: The crackdown on counterfeit and fake goods is no longer a warning. It is no longer a mere inspection. The authorities have been launching an unprecedented general attack on counterfeit and fake goods, smuggling, and trade fraud, with the spirit of no forbidden areas and no exceptions.
The general attack has exposed the reality of counterfeit and fake goods. Many experts believe that if businesses operate properly, have clear origins of goods, and fully fulfill their legal obligations, then there is no need to close.
This also explains why dozens of tons of candy were dumped in La Phu village, thousands of boxes of functional foods were stolen in Binh Chanh; why a series of cheap fashion stores in Ninh Hiep, Saigon Square, Dong Xuan, Hang Dao, and Chua Boc have closed recently.
