Grow up from reading daily newspaper

(GLO)- I still remember, when I was still the Head of the Administrative Department of the Gia Lai-Kon Tum Provincial Party Committee Office, at 6:45 every day, Mr. Vu Xuan Sac was present at the agency's meeting room.

Sitting in the same position he always sat, he opened his notebook, carefully read over the notes of the work done the day before, and assessed the pros and cons so that he could correct them during the meeting, if they were the employees' shortcomings. Sitting next to him, I occasionally glanced over and saw him marking the "roll call" to see who was present and who was absent. He did this job every day at the beginning of work without getting bored.

The newspaper reading session starts at exactly 7 o'clock. The newspaper reading is assigned to me, the Secretary of the Youth Union. I carefully prepare the news that needs to be updated during the day, usually news, articles, entertainment columns... published in newspapers about my province or an editorial in Nhan Dan or Quan Doi Nhan Dan newspapers. On many days when there is important content, the newspaper reading session also takes time for everyone to exchange and discuss to gain deeper understanding. In the 80s of the last century, ordering newspapers was not easy, the budget for buying newspapers was planned from the previous year, and only after the agency's leaders approved could the money for the newspaper subscription be spent.

Departments, divisions, and organizations that register to buy newspapers must prepare a "report" to be collected and submitted to the leaders for approval. But even with the money, ordering newspapers is difficult, because newspapers are only distributed through the post office and usually 2-3 days after publication, newspapers from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City will arrive in Pleiku. The Provincial Party Committee Office has priority. Gia Lai-Kon Tum Newspaper does not have to be purchased but is given as a gift, each issue has enough for the departments, divisions, and leaders in the agency as well as the comrades in the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee.

Subscribing to Party newspapers is mandatory for all agencies, departments, branches, and localities because of the directive of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee on this matter. At the Provincial Party Committee Office, organizing newspaper reading is to save money on newspaper purchases, and also to replace the daily roll call and timekeeping of workers. This is also one of the criteria for annual emulation and reward voting. Moreover, after about 15 minutes of reading the newspaper, a meeting is held. Departments report on the work of the previous day and the agency leaders announce and remind about the work of the day and the week. This activity is repeated over and over again, but no one gets bored.

Also from those meetings and newspaper readings, many people... matured. Mr. Ro Mah Luyn (later Secretary of Duc Co District Party Committee) is an example. Listening to the newspaper reading, he carefully took notes of things he did not understand, then when he had free time, he would ask everyone about it. "If you don't know, ask, if you are not good, learn" - he always thought like that. I am no exception. From reading the newspaper every day, I accumulated a lot of useful knowledge for work and life, including in how to treat people. The Provincial Party Committee Office at that time had many brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles with high education levels and extensive knowledge. Therefore, through reading newspapers and exchanging, young people like us had the opportunity to approach and learn many things, thereby improving our qualifications and knowing how to apply the acquired knowledge in work and life later on.

Nowadays, newspapers are not as scarce as they used to be, but very few people are still passionate about reading books and newspapers. There are many reasons, but in my opinion, the main reason is that they no longer have the desire to learn from newspapers. Many times, I accidentally see newspapers of all kinds still intact at scrap collection facilities. To make a newspaper requires the effort and intelligence of many people, so if it is not used for the right purpose, it is a waste!
