China: Museum dedicated to Shimao culture opens

China has just opened a museum dedicated to the 4,000-year-old Shimao culture in Shenmu City, Shaanxi Province.

The museum covers an area of ^{​​12,890m2} , displaying 688 artifacts, including jade, stoneware, pottery, bone tools and murals.

The museum's exhibition is based on the theme of “Ancient China and the Capital of Civilization”, reflecting the important value and unique position of the Shimao civilization in the development of Chinese civilization.

The Shimao site dates back 4,300–3,800 years to the late Longshan culture and is the largest prehistoric stone city site discovered in China. The Shimao site is located in the Loess Plateau, on the southern edge of the Ordos Desert.

Since early 2012, China has officially conducted surveys and excavations at this site. Archaeological results show that the Shimao city area is huge, with many large architectural works and buildings. Tens of thousands of artifacts of many different genres have also been excavated.
