Except for Vietnam and Thailand, Southeast Asian football was undefeated last night.

(Dan Tri) - Southeast Asian teams were undefeated in the second round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers on the evening of June 10, except for reigning AFF Cup champions Vietnam and runner-up Thailand.

Specifically, in Group A, the Philippines tied with Tajikistan 2-2. With this result, the Philippines continues to lead the group with 4 points after two matches. The Philippines is equal on points with Tajikistan, but the Southeast Asian team is ranked above their opponent thanks to a better sub-index. Also in Group A, Timor Leste beat Maldives 1-0.

In Group B, Brunei beat Bhutan 2-1. After this victory, Brunei unexpectedly climbed to second place in the group, with 3 points, more than Yemen (2 points).

In Group C, Singapore won 2-1 against Bangladesh. This victory helped the Lion Island team lead the group. Singapore has the same 4 points as the second-placed team Hong Kong (China), but Singapore has a better secondary goal difference.

In Group E, Myanmar beat Pakistan 1-0. Myanmar has 6 points after two matches, equal to the top team Syria. Myanmar is temporarily ranked second in the group because of the lower additional index.

In Group F, Laos beat Nepal 2-1. Meanwhile, Malaysia beat Vietnam 4-0.

Vietnam and Thailand are the two rare Southeast Asian teams that lost in the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup on the night of June 10. Thailand lost 1-3 to Turkmenistan on their home field.

The situations of the Vietnamese and Thai teams are now identical, both facing the risk of being eliminated from the 2027 Asian Cup, after only two qualifying matches.

In case they both win full points against the weak teams in Group F including Laos and Nepal in the remaining matches, the Vietnamese team needs to beat Malaysia with a difference of at least 4 goals in the second leg between the two teams in March 2026.

Similarly, in case Thailand and Turkmenistan both get full points against weak opponents Taiwan and Sri Lanka in Group D, Thailand needs to beat Turkmenistan by two goals or more in the return match in March next year.

The current champion and runner-up of the AFF Cup therefore face a great risk of being absent from the 2027 Asian Championship.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian team not to participate in the third qualifying round of the Asian Cup. The team from the archipelago has a direct ticket to the final round of this tournament, reserved for teams that have reached the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia.
