Special exhibitions at art museums: Flexible and creative to attract visitors

In order to make thematic exhibitions more effective and accessible to the public, in recent times, the Da Nang Fine Arts Museum has integrated many art experience activities to serve the people and tourists. Thereby introducing art forms, evoking emotions and raising aesthetic awareness for the public.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Trinh, Deputy Director in charge of the Da Nang Fine Arts Museum, said that thematic exhibitions at the museum require high artistic and visual qualities, focusing on the aesthetic elements of space, light, color, materials, etc. to create emotions and artistic experiences for viewers.

The Museum of Fine Arts has organized thematic exhibitions combined with supporting activities to strengthen connections and create conditions for artists to meet and exchange creative experiences, contributing to the development of fine arts in the new period.

In particular, the museum focuses on organizing experiential activities suitable for each topic and aimed at children, pupils and students, typically: Exhibition "Vietnamese Folk Paintings" with the experience of printing Dong Ho folk paintings; Exhibition "Graphic works of Da Nang Fine Arts Museum" with the experience activities of "Portrait sketching", "Calligraphy writing".

In addition, museum staff guide young people, children, and visitors to participate in activities such as drawing with gouache, oil pastels, engraving, and printing graphic paintings, helping visitors create many creative and impressive art products.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, an employee of the Hue Museum of Fine Arts, said that in recent times, along with thematic exhibitions, the Hue Museum of Fine Arts has organized additional activities such as research, performances, film screenings, etc. with content related to the topic to ensure flexibility and creativity suitable for the personalities and psychology of many ages. At the same time, the museum organizes many mini games in the experiential tour programs at the exhibition with attractive content such as "Learn about artifacts with gifts" to create an impression on visitors.

Meanwhile, according to a representative of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, on average, the museum organizes 3-4 thematic exhibitions each year. Thereby, it proactively exploits the use of technology and experiential activities to increase interaction with the public. Many activities that resonate with traditional exhibitions such as gift giving, art talks, and music performances with appropriate content have actively supported thematic exhibitions, attracting the public to fine arts.

Towards the electronic museum

Short-term thematic exhibitions are considered an important activity to help museums refresh their content to increase their appeal to the public. In addition to traditional thematic exhibitions, many art museums have turned to applying technology to organize electronic galleries, thereby expanding the exhibition space and reaching more visitors.

Recently, Da Nang Fine Arts Museum has applied technology to the exhibition space such as: creating VR Tour; integrating QR code technology and virtual MC to explain and introduce the museum overview.

Painter Truong Nguyen Nguyen Kha, Head of the Museum Affairs Department (Da Nang Fine Arts Museum) said that in order to bring short-term thematic exhibitions closer to the public, the museum has launched an online exhibition space "DNFAM Online Gallery" which can be exhibited both on the exhibition space on the first floor of the museum and on the virtual space. In addition, the museum has also successfully organized the online exhibition "Loving Family" on the online exhibition space.

Sharing the experience of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, artist Vuong Le My Hoc, Head of Exhibition and Education Department (Vietnam Fine Arts Museum) said that applying digital technology to exhibition activities to attract visitors is a trend and an inevitable need of museums, thereby creating a close connection between the museum and the massive cultural heritage system of Vietnam. Through different ways of expression, the presence of digital technology has made the museum more attractive.

In recent times, the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum has pioneered the application of technology to serve the public, such as: using 3D mapping technology, digital projection in exhibitions, and at the same time researching the use of AI to increase interaction with the public.

In particular, after the Covid-19 pandemic, in response to public demand, the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum has collaborated with research partners to build the VAES online exhibition space, eliminating geographical, spatial, and temporal distances in thematic exhibitions. This effort has brought the award "Outstanding Digital Transformation Unit 2024" to the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.

According to experts, to improve the quality of public service, art museums need to build digital data sources, prepare technical infrastructure and build a professional operating team. This is the stage that lays the foundation for the process of digitizing museums to move towards building electronic museums.

In addition, providing internet service, free wifi and phone charging areas at rest stops is also essential in a modern museum to best serve visitors in the digital age.
