The Tram Tau District Forest Protection Management Board is currently managing over 35,000 hectares of forests of all kinds, of which over 29,000 hectares are paid for forest environmental services. The entire forest area is contracted with 55 contract owners, which are organizations, communities, households, and individuals participating in forest protection and development in villages, with 6,331 participating households benefiting. The annual payment for the forest area assigned and protected is over 21 billion VND from the Yen Bai Provincial Forest Protection and Development Fund.
In particular, some communes with large forest areas were assigned for protection such as Ban Mu, Ban Cong and Tuc Dan, which were paid from 4.2 billion to 4.6 billion VND.
Revenue from environmental services is not only a motivation for people to stay connected with the forest but also creates positive changes in forest management and protection at the grassroots level. Many households have become more aware of forest protection and have coordinated well with forest rangers and local authorities in patrolling and preventing forest fires.
Payment for forest environmental services is promoting practical effectiveness in socio -economic development, while contributing to maintaining forest cover, protecting ecosystems and water resources in the Tram Tau highland area.
