According to newly released data from JATO Dynamics, Toyota RAV4 achieved sales of 1.187 million vehicles, surpassing Tesla Model Y by just over 2,000 vehicles.
In 2023, the Tesla Model Y made history by becoming the world's best-selling vehicle, the first time an electric vehicle had achieved this feat. However, Model Y sales in 2024 fell by 3% to 1.185 million units, giving the RAV4 – with an 11% growth – the opportunity to take the throne.
In the US, the Toyota RAV4 has also just surpassed the Ford F-150 to become the best-selling vehicle of 2024, excluding Super Duty variants. This double success shows the RAV4's stable appeal in a global context witnessing strong fluctuations in consumer behavior and electric vehicle policy.
Not only RAV4, Toyota also dominates the list of top 10 best-selling car models in the world in 2024 with four other representatives: Corolla Cross (other name: Frontlander); Corolla Sedan (Levin Sedan); Hilux and Camry.
On the other hand, Tesla only has one more representative, Model 3, ranked 9th with about 560,000 cars sold.
The remaining names in the global top 10 include: Honda CR-V (4th place); Ford F-150 (7th place) and BYD Qin – the only Chinese model to make the list (10th place).
The above sales figures reflect the results of the previous versions of both the Toyota RAV4 and the Tesla Model Y. Starting in the second half of 2024, the competition between the two best-selling cars in the world will move into a new generation phase, promising many changes.
As for Toyota, the company officially launched the 6th generation RAV4 last May, expected to be distributed as a 2026 model. The most important change is the complete removal of pure gasoline engines, switching to 100% hybrid powertrain, clearly demonstrating the increasingly aggressive electrification orientation of the Japanese brand.
On the other hand, Tesla has launched an upgraded version of the Model Y, codenamed “Juniper”, which is expected to help restore growth momentum after a year of decline. However, the rapid decline in the European market and some key regions is expected to make it difficult for the company to regain the global throne by 2025.
