Compact SUVs have become a staple in the global product portfolio, and the Toyota Corolla Cross is a prime example. Designed to cater to a variety of markets, the model faces a unique challenge in China. Accordingly, in this billion-people market, foreign car manufacturers must sell domestically assembled versions through separate joint ventures. That is why Toyota Frontlander was born. Basically, this is a brother of Toyota Corolla Cross but exclusively produced by the GAC Toyota joint venture.
Both models are now set to receive mid-life facelifts with updated designs and familiar powertrains. In China, the Corolla Cross is manufactured by FAW Toyota while the Frontlander is assembled by GAC Toyota. The facelifted versions of both the 2026 Toyota Frontlander and Corolla Cross have been revealed early thanks to registrations with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Thanks to that, we can know the design of the car in advance. While FAW Toyota's Corolla Cross inherits the design from the recently launched global version, GAC Toyota's Frontlander has its own appearance, focusing on the front of the car, when equipped with a sharp nose, similar to the Toyota Corolla GR Sport for the European and Japanese markets. Meanwhile, the lower part of the front bumper does not come with a large radiator grille but instead has a design inspired by electric vehicles.
In addition, the front bumper of the car has also been redesigned to enhance aerodynamics. The front bumper now has only a small air intake. Meanwhile, the lower part is more prominent with glossy decorative accents. The LED cluster of the Toyota Frontlander 2026 is designed similar to the high-end versions of the Corolla Cross in other markets. Meanwhile, the standard version still uses the old headlights. The rest of the new 2026 Toyota Frontlander seems to remain the same. There are no interior images yet, but it is likely that the car will be upgraded to a digital dashboard. The car has dimensions of length x width x height of 4,490 x 1,825 x 1,625 mm and a wheelbase of 2,640 mm, similar to the new Corolla Cross, which is 5 mm longer than the old version. Like its predecessor, the compact SUV will be offered with either a gasoline or self-charging hybrid engine. The gasoline version uses a 2.0L, 4-cylinder engine that produces a maximum capacity of 169 horsepower. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox. Meanwhile, the hybrid version combines a 156-horsepower 2.0L gasoline engine with an electric motor (111 horsepower), a ternary lithium-ion battery, an E-CVT gearbox and front-wheel drive.
Toyota has not yet announced an official launch date for the new Frontlander. However, the car is expected to be available at dealerships in the near future. The old version of the car is also currently being discounted at dealerships to clear inventory. The Corolla Cross was first launched in 2020 and has since become one of Toyota's most successful models. In 2024, the Corolla Cross ranked third in the list of best-selling cars globally with 859,000 units, up 18% from 2023. This figure puts the Corolla Cross ahead of both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Toyota Corolla line, but still behind its elder sibling, the RAV4.
