President Donald Trump successfully settles Elon Musk's social media lawsuit

A federal appeals court approved a settlement earlier this week that would see the plaintiff, President Donald Trump, voluntarily dismiss the lawsuit, with each side paying its own legal costs, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

President Donald Trump has reconciled with social network X

In 2021, Donald Trump sued Twitter (formerly known as X), claiming that his First Amendment rights were violated after he was banned from the platform “due to the risk of inciting violence.” This was after the attack on the Capitol by a group of supporters on January 6, 2021.

A judge later dismissed the case in 2022, but Trump and the other plaintiffs appealed. In November 2024, although the federal appeals court had yet to issue a ruling, the parties announced that after the recent presidential election, they would reconcile to reach a final decision.

This latest move is not too surprising, as Elon Musk has long been a strong supporter of Mr. Trump. Specifically, after buying Twitter in 2022, he restored the new president's account.

In recent months, after reportedly spending $250 million to help Donald Trump return to the White House, Elon Musk is now serving as a “special government employee,” leading the White House’s effort to cut the size of the federal government .

Although he said he would not receive a salary, observers and many people believe that with this position, Elon Musk will likely have the opportunity to use the relationships and roles he has to further promote his business.

And it’s not just Elon Musk who’s in the Trump administration’s inner circle; Mark Zuckerberg has also shown interest in the new administration. Last month, Meta settled a similar lawsuit with Trump, even though it had previously argued that its suspension was protected by the First Amendment.

Accordingly, Meta - the parent company of Facebook and Instagram - agreed to pay $ 25 million to Mr. Trump and other plaintiffs, of which about $ 22 million will be transferred to his library - part of the Presidential Library system managed by the National Archives and Records Administration, a federal agency.

When asked for comment, President Donald Trump's lawyer and X platform did not immediately respond.
