Alexander Isak has publicly declared that Newcastle “broke their promise” and asserted that “the relationship cannot continue”. Meanwhile, Liverpool bide their time, while Newcastle struggle between their ambition to keep their star and the need to add a striker. The incident has turned Isak into the biggest focus of the summer transfer window in 2025.

When Isak broke the silence

For weeks, Alexander Isak chose to stay silent, letting the rumors swirl around his future. But then, on Instagram, the Swedish striker released a strong message: he no longer had faith, because the commitments between him and Newcastle had not been kept.

Behind the statement was a simmering frustration. Isak believed Newcastle would let him go if a “big guy” made a decent offer. When Liverpool put a whopping £110m on the table, Isak hoped the door would be opened. But the club refused, insisting there had never been an agreement for him to leave.

At 25, Isak was entering the prime of his career. With 35 goals in two Premier League seasons, he had proved his worth. With Liverpool chasing him, it was a chance to move up the ladder. But Newcastle chose to hold on - and there was a breakdown in trust between player and club.

Newcastle responded with a statement: Isak was still under contract, no commitments had been made, and any decision would be made in the best interests of the club. It was a tough stance, but it also exposed the club's predicament.

Newcastle have already lost Callum Wilson and have not found a replacement, so they cannot afford to lose Isak. In this context, any move to sell their main striker would cause the attack to collapse. But the lack of a replacement has left Newcastle a prisoner of the situation.

Isak wants to leave Newcastle.

It’s a familiar paradox in modern football: clubs want to keep their stars, but stars want to leave, and the equilibrium is often determined by the market. If Newcastle can find two new strikers – as the leak suggests – the door to Isak’s move to Liverpool could open. If they don’t, they’ll have to force themselves to refuse, despite the risk of a rift in the dressing room.

Liverpool are not in a hurry to come back with a new offer. Partly because they understand Newcastle's weakness: without a striker, they cannot sell Isak. Partly because Liverpool know that the closer the deadline gets, the greater the pressure.

Sources say that if Newcastle solves the striker problem, Liverpool will raise the price to at least £120 million. That is a number big enough to challenge any “no-sale” commitment. And then, Newcastle will have to choose: keep Isak with the risk of internal instability, or sell him to reinvest?

In any scenario, Liverpool are in the driving seat. They have the financial resources, the prestige, and the appeal of a team capable of competing in both the Premier League and the Champions League. For Isak, Anfield is clearly the dream destination.

Fierce market, Newcastle struggling

Newcastle’s problems are not limited to Isak. The striker market this summer has been hotter than ever. Seven strikers have been bought for €50m or more, many times more than last year. The names they were after – Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, Joao Pedro – have all gone to rivals.

Yoane Wissa is a specific target, but Brentford are asking for more than £40 million. Jorgen Strand Larsen is a target that Wolves are determined not to let go. In that context, Newcastle are forced to play Anthony Gordon as a striker in the opening match. That image shows the stalemate: the team wants to keep Isak at all costs, but does not have enough capacity to replace him if he leaves.

Newcastle do not want to lose Isak.

At the heart of the matter is not just money, but trust. Isak believes there was an “unspoken agreement” that he would be allowed to leave if a suitable offer came along. Newcastle deny this. When one party feels betrayed, the relationship becomes difficult to repair.

Eddie Howe still says “the door is always open”. The club calls Isak “part of the family”. But who would believe those nice words when Isak himself asserts: “When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship cannot continue”?

In modern football, loyalty often takes a back seat to career and opportunity. Isak doesn’t want to miss out on Liverpool, nor does Liverpool want to miss out on a striker who has proven his class in the Premier League. Newcastle may resist in the short term, but it’s hard to keep a star if his heart is gone.

What is the outcome of the tension triangle?

Three sides – Isak, Newcastle, Liverpool – are locked in a stalemate.

· Newcastle need time to buy a striker.

· Liverpool wait for the opportunity to take down.

· Isak wanted to leave as soon as possible.

The market closes on September 1. With less than two weeks to go, anything is possible. If Liverpool make a strong bid, the deal is likely to happen. If not, Newcastle will have to face a disgruntled star, who is being called “greedy” by his own fans.

In both cases, the rift in trust was there. And with a player of Isak's caliber, that trust is unlikely to be fully repaired.

The Isak - Newcastle - Liverpool story is a classic example of the fragility of the player-club relationship. Promises, trust, opportunity and money all collide in a fierce market. Newcastle may be able to keep Isak for another season, but it will be difficult to keep his heart.

After all, football is not just about goals on the pitch, but also a battle of psychology, belief and choice. And in that battle, Newcastle is at risk of defeat even without selling Isak, because they have lost the most precious thing: the commitment of their key player.
