According to a new report released by the General Statistics Office ( Ministry of Finance ), the consumer price index (CPI) in June increased by 0.48% compared to the previous month but increased by 3.57% compared to the same period in 2024. In the second quarter, the CPI increased by 3.31% over the same period, due to the influence of 6 groups of goods.

The CPI increase was mainly due to the 3.6% increase in food and catering services, contributing 1.21 percentage points to the overall increase. Of which, food prices increased by 4.1%, causing the CPI to increase by 0.87 percentage points. The price of eating out increased by 3.68% due to increased raw material and labor costs, contributing 0.32 percentage points.

The housing, electricity, water and construction materials group increased by 6.35%, mainly due to the increase in house rent and household electricity prices, with a total impact of 1.2 percentage points. In May, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) adjusted the retail price of household electricity according to Decision 1279 from May 10 with an increase of 4.8% at all levels.

Education service prices also increased by 2.95% in the quarter as some provinces and cities increased tuition fees for the new school year, causing the CPI to increase by 0.18 percentage points.

Meanwhile, medical services increased sharply by 13.35%, contributing 0.72 percentage points due to adjustments according to Circular 21 on pricing methods for medical examination and treatment services of the Ministry of Health .

In addition, the culture, entertainment and tourism group increased by 1.98%, affecting 0.09 percentage points, while the other goods and services group increased by 6.57% due to the increase in gold and personal goods prices.

On the contrary, the downward trend of the price index of the transportation, postal and telecommunications group played a role in holding down the CPI in the second quarter.

Core inflation in June increased by 0.31% compared to the previous month and increased by 3.46% compared to the same period last year. On average, in the first 6 months of 2025, core inflation increased by 3.16% compared to the same period last year, lower than the 3.27% increase of the average CPI, mainly due to the prices of food, foodstuffs, electricity, and medical services, which are factors that increase the CPI but are excluded from the list of goods for calculating core inflation.

In addition, the gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter increased positively with an estimated increase of 7.96% over the same period last year, only lower than the growth rate of 8.56% in the second quarter of 2022 in the 2020-2025 period.

The industrial, construction and service sectors still account for the highest proportion of industries contributing to the economy.

In the first 6 months, GDP increased by 7.52% over the same period last year, the highest level of the first 6 months in the period 2011-2025.
