According to MacRumors , Apple Authorized Resellers (AARs) in the European Union (EU) have been asked to complete training related to eSIM on iPhone by May 9. That suggests that the iPhone 17 will eliminate the SIM slot in more countries.
Information about the training is provided in the SEED app, which is used to support Apple Store employees and AARs around the world . Therefore, retail employees in countries outside the EU can take the course, if Apple decides to remove the SIM slot in more regions.
In the US, all iPhone 14 and later devices have ditched the physical SIM slot, instead using only eSIM. Currently, iPhones in other countries still have a physical SIM slot, although that may change starting with the iPhone 17.
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 on September 9, just four days after employees complete their training. The EU currently has 27 countries, such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands...
Similar information was shared by The Information in November 2024. Accordingly, Apple plans to remove the SIM slot on the iPhone 17 in more countries.
At the time, the site did not specify which models or countries would remove the SIM slot. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the iPhone 17 Air would no longer have a SIM slot in most countries due to its ultra-thin design.
With the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, Kuo said there is still a possibility that the 3 devices will remove the SIM slot globally, although there are still some exceptions, especially China because the carrier here only supports eSIM on Apple Watch and iPad.
When Apple launched the iPhone 14 in 2022, it emphasized that eSIMs are more secure than physical SIMs because they cannot be stolen or removed from the device. Users can add at least 8 eSIMs to the device, making it easy to manage and change SIMs when traveling .
According to many sources, the iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max will have a major change in the rear design. In particular, the expensive iPhone will have a zoom camera upgraded by the company. The price of the device is also likely to increase slightly compared to the previous generation.
In addition to the iPhone, Apple Watch, and new iPads are also expected to appear at the September 9 event.
